Hi Everyone, I work at a Catholic place for at-risk teeens ( teens who come from bad back grounds, been abused in everyway, been on drugs, sex, suicidal thoughts ect. and are hurting so much) and I have descerned religous life ( been in a few comunities) for some time too. I put the idea of religious life aside to come and work here but still wonder about it. I find that I love this work so much! It is what I Have dreamed of doing…I only wish I there was a religious order that did this…does anyone know of any?It is such a wonderful thing to help this hurting girls and so much fun too! To make them see themselves in the light of God and help them heal and prepare to really live again…ITs soo awesome! They teach you so much too! Th

And second question is there anyone out there interested in this sort of work and living a life dedicated to Christ while doing it? I would very much like to talk with you, especially other young women!

Someone over on Phatmass brought this up. We’ve come up with a couple:

The Sisters of Christian Love work with families with problems and there is another group someone mentioned on Phatmass
that works with troubled youths and families.
I think it’s great you want to help these kids better their lives.
The Sisters of the Holy Spirit and Mary Immaculate here in San Antonio have the Healy -Murphy Learning Center and they work with girls, some of whom are teen moms.
They were founded back in the late 19th century by Margaret Healy-Murphy,to help teach blacks and hispanic children
and others of course. The isters do a lot of good through their center.
Also check out HeartsHome…They work with teens and others
and have priests and sisters.www.heartshomeusa.

The good shepherds are totally liberal are they not? I have looked for them before and they looked so liberal. PLus I have met some that are. I wish they were not because they would be my first choice. Thanks for all the suggestions!

Working with at-risk teens is definitely a tough job but so rewarding when you see teens responding to your methods and style. 🙂

At-risk teens are those who are literally at risk of making choices that lead to behavior patterns that are destructive to themselves, to their relationships with others and to their communities. They are those who are likely to wind up injured, sick, homeless, commit suicide, sexually abused or in jail due to their destructive behavior.

Good luck with the at-risk teens. I spent a weekend working with the youth offenders and I couldn’t stand the attitude or the “harm reduction methods” such as teaching them how to mix their drugs more safely so they don’t have a heart attack, etc.

I’m a community corrections service worker with adult offenders, which though frustrating at times, is something I really enjoy doing. I’m still new to what I’m doing, but I have been wondering if perhaps I have a vocation as a consecrated virgin living in the world supervising adult offenders.
