DETROIT — Just days after a Muslim couple carried out a mass shooting in California, the phone lines at the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee in Dearborn, Mich., started ringing.
Women in headscarves were calling for help, asking how to protect against discrimination in the workplace — and anywhere else they ventured.

Workplace bias is always a difficult issue. No sane employer will tell an employee that they were fired for being Muslim. It’s very difficult from the outside to discern when discrimination has occurred.

If I were an employer, and I had two equal candidates, both women, and one wore are headscarf, would I discriminate? If one woman had a small baby and the other did not, would I discriminate? If one woman were obsess, and the other was not, would I discriminate? If one woman was 25 and the other was 62, would I discriminate? If one woman was extremely attractive and the other was very plain, would I discriminate?

What is your point?

I was under the impression that the State of Michigan was Muslim friendly.

You’re the same guy that keeps posting incendiary things to get things going and you ask what my point is?

OK, I’ll bite. My point is that people discriminate all the time for all sorts of reasons. You can almost never prove it, and complaining simply ensures that the company will never, ever hire you under any circumstances. If you wear a headscarf, it’s like painting a target on your back. Will you be discriminated against in 2015 if you wear a headscarf? Of course. Will everyone do it? No. Will some people do it? Yes. Should you be shocked and surprised? No.

Please elaborate. How is wearing a headscarf like painting a target on your back?

It’s saying “I’m a Muslim. Not only that, but I’m a conservative Muslim.” The Wahhabis in Saudi Arabia are conservative Muslims. The lovely people in ISIS and al-Qaeda are conservative Muslims. And now you come along and say you’re one, too. All extremist Muslims are conservative Muslims; but not all conservative Muslims are extremists…but now you’re asking someone to distinguish between you and the bad guys simply on the basis of your wearing a headscarf. Then you’re surprised when they can’t–and frankly, they don’t want to take the time to sort it out. I have a simple solution: don’t wear a headscarf. Problem solved.

Let me give you an analogy to attack: I watch Hindi movies. I just saw a preview of one where a character is drawing a large swastika as part of a design. Kipling used swastikas on his books. They are a Hindu sign of good luck, dating back at least 2200 years. OK. So let’s say I’m a totally ignorant naive person who has only vaguely heard of Nazis, and I think to myself, “I want good luck too, so I’m going to design a shirt covered in swastikas and wear it when I walk down the street in Brooklyn.” Somehow I think people would judge you based on your choice of shirt design. Your ignorance of WW II and the later history of the swastika wouldn’t be accepted as an excuse. You would be insensitive at best, offensive at worst.
