The Savior stated the following:

John 14:12 (KJV) Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

In what way do you believe that followers of Christ in your denomination have done, do, or will do works greater than those of our Lord and Master? Clearly without such a verse in the Bible, such an inquiry could seem blasphemous. But, it’s there. How do you see this verse being fulfilled? Thanks.

He was showing himself to be the greatest of all by humility.

Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life+

Well, since this statement was connected to miracles performed by our Lord, I think what he ment was that miracles, healings will follow the preaching of the Gospel. And if the apostles were amazed by a simple healing, what would they say about Padre Pio bilocating, Martin de Porres levitating, etc. Power is something that follows the Gospel. Not necessarily, only if it is required.

Why would they do greater works? Because he was leaving. I think, by the context, he was saying they will do even more miracles than he did after he was gone, not better ones. Especially when we consider that he was one person performing miracles, and after he was gone there were many doing the same in multiple places.

Also, just think about Peter walking down the street with people being healed when his shadow fell on them. I mean… that alone seems to fulfill that verse. I kind of imagine that scene in an abstract way… walking across a field of dead grass, leaving a path of fresh green grass and blooming flowers in his wake, hehe.

Many people have spread the Gospel further than Jesus did during His 3 year ministry on earth. They have founded orders of religious and published great works that have lead thousands to God. Many have found cures that have saved thousands of lives. (Granted none of this would happen without the Lord’s help) I believe this is what Jesus was referring too in the passage)

According to the Lectures on Faith by the Prophet Joseph Smith, the “greater works” were to be done in heaven where Jesus was going, and where he promised his disciples to be with him, and where they would “behold his glory”.

Well that’s very interesting but it is not what Jesus said. He said that those who believed would do greater things then he, not that he would go to heaven and do greater things there. But I guess Joseph Smith trumps the words of Christ.
