What about works without faith? Would you consider them to be useless and non-spiritual?
Depends on your assumptions. I don’t think any works are useless in and of themselves – God seems to be able to turn all actions to good in some way.
What would remain would be any idea that these works that God prepared for us would directly merit our salvation apart from our faith in Christ. My only issue here would be that many verses in Scripture assure us that we could never be clean before God without Christ’s initial atone for our sins.
This seems to be the way that “faith vs. works” discussions always seem to morph into - a discussion of “faith alone” vs. “works alone”.
Are people capable of being saved by “works alone”? Absolutely not. NOR by “faith alone”.
Salvation isn’t a matter of “EITHER faith (alone) OR works (alone)”, as neither faith alone nor works alone merit salvation, but “BOTH faith AND works.”
According to the CCC, paragraphs 161-162:
*161 - Believing in Jesus Christ and in the One who sent him for our salvation is necessary for obtaining that salvation.42 "Since “without faith it is impossible to please (God) " and to attain to the fellowship of his sons, therefore
without faith no one has ever attained justification, nor will anyone obtain eternal life ‘But he who endures to the end.’”]
162 - Faith is an entirely free gift that God makes to man. We can lose this priceless gift, as St. Paul indicated to St. Timothy: "Wage the good warfare, holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting conscience, certain persons have made shipwreck of their faith."44 To live, grow and persevere in the faith until the end we must nourish it with the word of God; we must beg the Lord to increase our faith;45
it must be “working through charity,” abounding in hope, and rooted in the faith of the Church.46
42 – Mk. 16:16; Jn. 3:36; 6:40
44 - 1 Tim. 1:18-19
45 – Mk. 9:24; Lk. 17:5; Lk. 22:32
46 – Gal. 5:6; Rom. 15:13; Jas. 2:14-26*
well, it doesn’t point to works as a part of salvation either does it?
Sure it does.
*" God “will give to each person according to what he has done.” (Rom. 2:6).
“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive recompense, according to what he did in the body, whether good or evil” (2 Cor. 5:10).
“Their end will correspond to their deeds” (2 Cor. 11:15).
“Now if you invoke as Father him who judges impartially according to each one’s works, conduct yourselves with reverence during the time of your sojourning” (1 Pet. 1:17).
“Then another scroll was opened, the book of life. The dead were judged according to their deeds, by what was written in the scrolls. The sea gave up its dead; then Death and Hades gave up their dead. All the dead were judged according to their deeds” (Rev. 20:12-13).*
Excepting Rev., all of these were written specifically to believers.
In the same way that no passages of the Bible state that we are saved by “faith alone”, neither do any of these passages state that we are saved by “works alone.”
