Why not just distribute copies of the Compendium to the CCC…? Or the actual CCC?

I guess I just don’t understand the whole process. Doesn’t recognitio need to be given before any final publication? Phemie…you’re a wealth of info…do you know, by chance?

I have no more knowledge than anyone here where this is concerned. I believe a publication like that would require a nihil obstat and an imprimatur. I suppose that it’s alway possible that things got changed at the printers.

Not flashy enough? You must give them something they are going to actually open and read. Not every youth who goes to WYD goes there for the religion – I know enough who went to understand that. Giving them a book they’ll be attracted to will at least increase the chance they’ll peruse the content.

I agree. And, when they have rectified the errors, the YouCat would be a fine companion for the young. Here’s a link to sample pages from Ignatius Press:

Despite the fears of nefarious, anti-Church-teaching intentions, my guess is that the language was intended to mean that Catholic couples may use Church-approved methods to prevent pregnancy such as, for example, NFP. “Contraception” or “contraceptive” are commonly meant to mean “artificial contraception” such as the Pill or condoms.

Just my opinion. I don’t have sufficient knowledge of the languages involved to do more than opine.

Let’s face it, the CCC is not an appealing text – even if you are interested in reading it. If it’s never actually occurred to you to read it and/or you are not a reader, you will be put off by the size of the tome. This YOUCAT is appealing, easily read.

True. Personally, I reckon that the YouCat is the bridge between Penny Catechism and the heavy text of the current CCC.

I do not believe that in and of themselves the Bishops of Austria can approve a catechism without the whole contingent of the Magisterim, including the pope, in agreement.

This has shades of the infamous Dutch Catechism, parts of which were rejected by the Holy See.

Anyone may write a Catholic catechism, and in fact this is encouraged by the CCC itself:

This catechism is not intended to replace the local catechisms duly approved by the ecclesiastical authorities, the diocesan Bishops and the Episcopal Conferences, especially if they have been approved by the Apostolic See. It is meant to encourage and assist in the writing of new local catechisms, which take into account various situations and cultures, while carefully preserving the unity of faith and fidelity to catholic doctrine.

In spite of that statement, the publication of the CCC really took the wind out of the sails for authors and publishers of catechisms - who wants some writer’s interpretation or application of Church doctrine when we have the real deal?

If you intend to write your own, I would encourage you to obtain a Nihil obstat and imprimateur.

The CCC is big enough to use as a lethal weapon, I agree that it is a wee bit on the large size
