I can’t understand the ideology of Muslims regarding biggest mosque, largest Quran, biggest clock, tallest building!!!

I think all of that is a waste of money and resources, and it’s only categorized under “hypocrisy”.
  • 500kg weight.
  • 2.28 meters by 1.55 meters pages.
  • 5 years working time.
  • Leather cover made from the skins of 21 goats.
  • £300,000 cost.

I understand what you are saying. God bless you!

A thought came to me just now, about St. Francis of Assisi. He wholeheartedly embraced Lady Poverty, and spiritually grew to be a very great saint.

As a Catholic, as much I love my own face, and my Church, I need to ask a question. How is making a huge Koran hypocritical but the Vatican spending quite a lot of money and golden statues of Jesus or whoever not be hypocritical?

I think neither are hypocritical. I’m not Muslims but I think on both sides Catholics and Muslims are just how much they love the God they worship. Not the saying they worship the same one, it’s just the one they do worship, they worship exquisitely.

… Obviously, that is one Quran which no one will ever be reading alone for private reflection … the antithesis of the *pocket version * I guess.

🙂

Oh, BTW guys … this thread got me thinking, and, well… I just couldn’t resist doing a little research. Take a look at what is purported to be The World’s Largest Bible

😃

Yes, I agree. We must be careful not to fall into Judas’ way of thinking with regards to using expensive things for our Lord.

Well, I’m just glad it’s a Protestant Bible. Much less weight. 😉

Afghanistan is not the Vatican.

The 300,000 pounds they spent on this project could have easily gone into better use.

Such as schools perhaps, educational youth programs, taking care of the war widows and I’m sure there is dozen other stuff they could have done.

Between the Russian war and US war, Afghanistan is in need to repair. A giant size koran is meaningless.

My opinion.

To add to that…

"The Vatican does own property of substantial financial value. The Church could sell these items, but she considers herself the guardian of these treasures for the whole world. She makes them available for pilgrims and tourists to enjoy when visiting such places as St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and the various Vatican museums. The Church has also allowed her art holdings to be used in tours to countries including the United States, for those who cannot visit Italy and elsewhere. Revenue obtained by displaying these items is then used to assist the needs of people everywhere.

Critics have also objected to the use of costly vessels, including, in the past, even diamond-encrusted chalices. The Church has always used precious metals and other valuable materials in the construction of sacred vessels because they hold the Body and Blood of Christ. This tradition dates back to Old Testament times, when God ordered the use of precious metals and other costly materials in the construction of the ark of the covenant, the temple, and the furniture in the temple. These materials included gold, silver, bronze, fine linens, acacia wood, spices for oils and incense, and onyx stones (see e.g., Ex. 25-31). By giving our best to God, we are reminded that everything we have is a blessing from Him and that we need to seek Him first and trust in Him (cf. Mt. 6:33), instead of relying on ourselves and our own plans."

Though some of this comes from their theology. The Koran, is a sacred object. So like Catholics make large expensive Gold tabernacles and monstrances, they have made a large expensive Koran. (Now the point of it being as big as it is, I am not sure).

My ‘catholic’ university commissioned a hand written illuminated bible. It was quite expensive. But it was a work of art, a piece of history, and the bible, so no one complained. (They also make a bit of money, showing the books and pages around, and selling facsimiles and other paper items.

My husband and I visited Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral in Los Angeles last year. The docent’s tour was peppered with -ed and -est adjectives, and afterwards husband and I joked that we could have made a drinking game for each time he proudly mentioned that OLAC was “one square foot bigger” than St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York.

Our Lady of the Angels is less than 100 miles from the largest zone of childhood poverty and hunger in the United States.

So I guess Muslims don’t exactly have the market cornered on waste and hypocrisy.

Big, Useless, Ridiculous, Not worth the effort; Insane, Thriftless.

As far as Judas’ example: don’t forget he was the one in charge of the money purse for the group (John 13:29). I’ve always understood the “sell it for the poor!” line as him wanting to skim some $, not caring about the poor.(John 12:6)

😉

I find it sad that some people are calling this a waste of time. If anyone had bothered to research this project, you may have found that this and other works of art are part of a cultural centre’s attempt to revive traditional arts and crafts in Afghanistan which were pretty much destroyed by the Taliban, including calligraphy, weaving, pottery and embroidery, among other crafts. It is hoped that such skills will bring work to people, including women, as well as building an economy.

And you must understand the significance of the Qur’an in a Muslim’s life. It is the absolute foundation of their faith and so it deserves the praise as the Holy Word of Allah. Producing a handwritten/hand-made Qur’an is a work of love for the Word of God in a Muslims’ eyes, and decoration of Qur’an is intended to highlight the beauty of His Words as well as making the text more beautiful to the human eye.

Also, what’s the difference between this Qur’an and this:

Well, for us that book (the Bible) is the word of God. For Muslims, the Qur’an is the word of God.
I’ll rephrase: why is the Lindisfarne Gospels (which likely cost a LOT of money to produce) considered beautiful art and yet CAFers see fit to criticize an Afghan man for doing exactly the same for his holy book by copying it in calligraphy and decorating it?

Well, for us that book (the Bible) is the word of God. For Muslims, the Qur’an is the word of God.
But not in the same way. The Qur’an to Muslims is the literal word of God transcribed on paper, as if God spoke these exact words into Muhammad’s ear and he work them down as God spoke. Where for us, the bible is the holy spirit moving the authors to write the books and subjects they did. Except for Christ’s words in the bible, which are only recorded by others.

It’s a pretty nice Quran, hope they had fun making it, but where are the actual words and writing? I just see colorful pages but no pictures and a circle in the middle with squiggily gibberish on it 🤷

In Islam, the display of images of anything God created is seen as idolatrous. The Sunni are very adamant about this, whereas the Shia vary from images of Ali, etc either full face or with their faces blank (like, no features, not the mere lack of emotion).

To make up for the lack of icons in this regard, the Sunni (mainly, though it does happen in most branches) developed a system of calligraphy which is artistic. They might take a verse about a lion and artistically render it in the outline or shape of a lion like a modern graphic artist, without drawing a lion. (Zoomorphic calligraphy).

This method also renders certain things totally illegible to anyone not willing to work it out, or who doesn’t have a grasp of the language to a level of deciphering the shapes into a sentence or multiple sentences.

Wow, what a waste of money

All that money to take a satanic tome to kinkos and copy it’s pages on cheap paper…

Especially since most of the people there can’t even read anyway
