I have a friend at work that belongs to the Worldwide chorch of god which was run by a guy named Herbert Armstrong…He is extremely Anti-catholic and claims the catholic Church is a bunch of man made stuff and claims if its not in the bible its nonsense…I tried arguing the Matthew 16 Authority issue and he claims the typical “Petros means Little Rock” argument…Does anybody know anything about Herbert Armstrong? Im thinking about pointing out all of Armstrongs false prophecies…Just throwin it out there,Tanx:rolleyes:

yes my dear friend. herbert armstrong was a false prophet. but before you go :slapfight::blackeye::stretcher: make sure he is part of the old group. they had a major split years ago, with one side, finally accepting the trinity, and the deity of Christ. among many other truly Christian doctrines. the other side is still stuck where they were. might want to make sure your dealing with one of the old school ones first. the tranformation of this group was truly miraculous. peace 🙂

He is part of the old group…Should i just google Herbert Armstrong False prophet? or do you know a particular site? Ive kinda thrown my hands up but he’s relentless on my Catholicism…He was catholic at one time…Thanx for the help!!!

Yes, my father, at one time, loved reading the Plain Truth that they published.

The Armstrong group is “Binitarian” that is, they only accept the Father and Christ as the two Divine Persons in the Trinity. Their view on deification would suggest that everyone can become like the Father and the Son.

As for the argument that “if it’s not in the Bible,” well - when since the 16th century has “Bible-believing” led to one Church?

The Holy Spirit is not an “energy” but is a Divine Person as St Basil the Great showed in his discourse on the Holy Spirit.

Or else google “Non-Prophet Religious Groups . . .”

If your “friend” is disrespectful of your faith, he is not your friend and he has an axe to grind since he is a former Catholic (Former Catholics appears to be the largest non-Catholic group in North America nowadays . . .).

If you want to “converse” with him, start with showing how Binitarianism is a heresy on the basis of Scripture alone. And if the Armstrongites got it wrong on such a fundamental doctrine, what else did they get wrong . . .?

They are one more group in the last 150 years that have developed with wild ideas, teaching that the Church of Christ fell into apostasy in 70 AD etc. With their focus on prophecy, they appeal to a particular North American mind-set, one that loves kicking the exposed derriere of proverbial institutionalized sacred cows.

Such groups memorize particular scriptural verses which they quote so as to overwhelm others into thinking they MUST know what they are talking about since they know so much about the Bible. That schtick has been going on since the time of the Apostles among all manner of heretcis hell-bent on attacking Christ’s true Church.

hi alex. learned something new about them myself tonight with your post. didnt know they only believed in the Father and the Son. also they believe they are the new israel dont they? they dont believe God has a plan for the Jews today? i wonder what they do with the verse in romans which states God shall graft the Jewish people back in. it may not hurt for our friend to bring a former fundamentalist like myself or you, to counter their bible claims. if anything this could be viewed as work place harassment by the coworker. maybe they should just tell them they will discuss it off work hours? peace 🙂

I currently have family members in one of the offshoot churches that emerged after the death of Herbert Armstrong. There are many websites dealing with the damage to families caused by this so-called church (cult). Be ready as a catholic to be blamed for every calamity in history by members of this church. Good time to practice your apologetics.

Hey guys, thanx much for the support! Im lookin for a silver bullet and I think you gave me a few…I find the debates amusing but after a while the arrogance gets to me…lol…It may be a lost cause but it certainly has opened my eyes to the beauty of Catholicism…I think im gonna go with the false prophet and Binitarianism…Just gotta stick and move…lol…I thought I had him with the Matthew 16, because he told me he had to write a letter to his church for clarification…When he got the letter it just repeated the ol’ Petra-little rock routine…Thanx again for the help!!!👍

The Worldwide Church of God essentially no longer exists. According to Wikipedia, since Armstrong has died, the church has changed its name and changed its doctrines to that of mainstream Evangelical Christianity.

I belive HW’s son Garner Ted Armstrong took over.

The old-time Armstrongers were 1/2 Christian 1/2 Jewish like the SDAs. They observed the Jewish sabbath, and kept kosher basically.

They hated the Christian calendar and kept the Jewish holidays, I think the new group still may.

Just google Herbert W Armstrong and you will find every tiny detail about the Worldwide Church of God (WCOG). More than you will ever have wanted to know. They used to be called the Radio Church of God in the early 1960s. The old school believers are now under several different names. As mentioned above, the original church transformed itself, after Armstrong Senior’s death, into a totally mainstream Protestant denomination without the very unusual doctrines.

If you want the silver bullet, don’t get into messy arguments about the Trinity or about how the old Jewish festivals and Sabbath were never abrogated for Christians, or if the peoples of north western Europe, North America, Australia etc., are really the true descendants of the lost tribes of Israel…

The silver bullet is that NONE of Herbert Armstrongs prophesies (all based loosely on the Old and New Testaments) have come to pass. Someone has made a list of them but if you’re really keen you’ll have to google that yourself. The off-shoot churches remain very much like the original WCOG and are just rehashing the same prophesies with pseudo political analysis of world events mainly targeting Germany, the Catholic Church, the European Common Market etc…

In contrast they support modern Israel without reservation.

Then ask your friend to explain the booklet they had since 1956 entitled, ‘1975 in Prophesy’. That book can not be fobbed off by some glib statement because it was about the end of the world as we know it. The WCOG began on a big decline after the events didn’t come to pass by 1975.

I’m Australian. We do get some cults and extreme sects setting up from time to time, including the occasional “catholic” cult. But we don’t seem to get the consistent extremism that pervades the US scene. I don’t think we’ve ever experienced anything like the Klu Klux Klan, and whenever there is a major anti-Catholic group eg. Worldwide Church of God, Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses etc, it nearly always seems to originate in the US.

Maybe we’ve only got one tenth of the population, but even Europe and Britain don’t seem to have so much extreme anti-Catholic propaganda as the USA.

I’m curious as to why.

Not really. They split into smaller groups. The ‘Armstrongites’ are still out there, thier numbers are just dwindling.

We are just lucky!!!😃

Many years ago, (35 or so), when I was a dissatisfied lutheran, I looked into that WWCG. I used to listen to Garner Ted as I washed the dishes in the evening. I sent them a question re: The Shroud of Turin and they sent me a letter saying that it was a hoax, etc.
That was it. I never bothered with them again.
I believed in my heart then, as well as now, that it is the burial cloth of Christ and was insulted that they dismissed my inquiry so abruptly with no information as to why they considered it a hoax.
Since then I’ve learned how odd their “theology” is and wonder at my ignorance back then.
I followed my heart - right into The Holy Catholic Church. 😃

I use to read the Plain Truth as well. The WWCG had a huge selection of anti-evolution books and tracts. I had a teenage friend who’s family was really involved in WWCG…“British Israelism” and an odd view of God and His Family.

The Klu Klux Klan is mostly media myth, and is not comparable to Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, etc. But, yes, the US has been futile ground for cults. Up until about 50 years ago, the US was a very free, religious, and Protestant country, which opened the door for cults to develop.

Are Jehovah’s Witnesses a cult?

My dictionary defines a cult as: “Pursuit or devotion to some person, thing or activity.”

What person do the JW’s devote themselves to? Jehovah God? Jesus?
