My dictionary defines a cult as: “Pursuit or devotion to some person, thing or activity.”

What person do the JW’s devote themselves to? Jehovah God? Jesus?

They don’t believe that Jesus Christ is God. They believe that he is St. Michael the Archangel.

We have much more in common with mainline Protestants who believe that Jesus is Lord, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity.

On the timeline of Christianity the Jehovan’s Witnesses are a very recent Church. They believe they have gone back to the Bible, but have distorted and misunderstood it.

And yet if going back to the Hebrew and Greek Text the word Jehova does not appear. It is a incorrect interpetation that came about in the 1600’s. Also JW founder brought many of his teaching out of the Adventist that he had become involed with.
There is also the rejection by JW of Hell that is clears spoken of by Chirst.

His “false prophecies” will only be dismissed as Bible Study opinion, not that Armstrong made Prophecies.

In fact, the ONLY part of “US and BC in Prophecy” that is NOT LITERALLY STOLEN - paragraph by paragraph and sentence by sentence - from Joseph H. Allen’s “Joseph’s Birthright and Judah’s Scepter” is the bit Herbert stuck on to the end of it claiming that Germany was prophetically certain to destroy Britain and America BECAUSE they were the descendents OF the Assyrians.

I suppose Herbert W. Armstrong chose Tkach as his successor because Armstrong was doing what he thought was right in his own mind. And, then Tkach did the same. Some things were good and some were not.

“In his own mind” is key here.

Without God-given authority to adhere to, there is confusion and more and more splitting off into denominations.

I knew a girl in college who was part of this group. Wonderful person, but man was her religion strange and based on a lot of half baked assumptions and outright false teaching. It was a little creepy and felt a lot like a cult.

Lots of newer churches have odd ideas about what the Catholic Church is, and rather than learn the truth they just keep passing on their view louder and louder. I am a protestant myself, but I prefer to debate actual doctrinal differences not perceived ones.

Also the girl I knew would not celebrate Christmas as it was a “Pagan Holiday” started by the Romans…apparently the tradition of Christmas Trees in her church’s opinion was a custom of Romans to celebrate conquests by hanging the heads and entrails of the conquered nations children on a pine tree. According to their teachings that is where Christmas ornaments and garlands came from. Interesting belief…except that Christmas Trees came from Germany in the late Middle Ages…some legends even say it was Luther who created the first Christmas Tree. Regardless, there is no historical or archeological proof for the Roman thing. After having my Christmas present to her returned…I didn’t even ask her what she thought about Easter.

I have met several very nice people who are part of this Church, but the Church itself is REALLY STRANGE.

I have a friend at work that belongs to the Worldwide chorch of god which was run by a guy named Herbert Armstrong…He is extremely Anti-catholic and claims the catholic Church is a bunch of man made stuff and claims if its not in the bible its nonsense…I tried arguing the Matthew 16 Authority issue and he claims the typical “Petros means Little Rock” argument…Does anybody know anything about Herbert Armstrong? Im thinking about pointing out all of Armstrongs false prophecies…Just throwin it out there,Tanx

JL: Herbert Armstrong came out of a splinter group of Seven Day Adventist. He started the World Wide Church of God. After his death the leardership ended up in the hands of those who did not hold all of Armstrong’s teachings and returned to more orthodox christian teachings such as the Trinity, it is still called WWC of G. Those who followed Armstrong teachings splintered into many many groups. The best know is the Phillidephia Church of God. Do a search to find their teachings, such as Britian and U.S. are lost tribes of Israel, no immortal soul, Saturday worship.
