Worried I’m in a state of Mortal Sin

I’ve been going to one place that offers confession daily once a week, but I never confessed all of my mortal sins because I did not have enough time in the confessional. I’ve taken Communion and I’m now afraid that I did it unworthilly because I have unconfessed mortal sins. I went in to confession every time with the intention to confess the mortal sins that were bothering me the most instead of all of them. I gave a general confession about a month ago but I completely forgot about some mortal sins. Does anyone know if I should stop taking Communion until I confess them all and should I confess that I took Communion unworthilly?

For God, also forgive me for any mortal sins that I can’t remember. Just mention that at the end, God knows all our sins, he will forgive and forget.

He seems to be saying he purposefully withheld some sins because he didn’t have time, which I personally don’t get as confessions can be done really quickly.

But he says it was a general confession? If the sins were already previously confessed, they are already forgiven.

If it’s really bothering you perhaps go to confession as soon as you can?

I’d err on the side of caution-don’t take communion, but confess as soon as possible so you can take it eventually.

Do you struggle with scruples? I struggle with scruples like crazy and this sounds a lot like something that always happens to me. It seems that normal people always go in with one or three mortal sins, and it always appears to me that I have about 30 to confess ( I’m not even kidding, I made a list the other day and I had 30). Consequently I also feel that I have to explain these sins and so forth. This drags my confessions on forever, and I have had it so the priest has more or less asked me to stop. Is this kind of what happened to you?

So if they are venial sins they will not need to be confessed in sacramental confession, but you can. It is important to understand that a mortal sin involves grave matter, and is done voluntarily through personal choice, after sufficient reflection.

You should explain all of this to your priest. I agree with what Kei said about the time in confession, not entirely sure what you mean here. If your situation sounds like what April29 described above, that is yet another reason to make an appointment with your priest so he can guide you through this.

What’s required in confession is the intention to confess all mortal sins that you’ve not yet been absolved of. I’m not claiming to know what you’re subjectively guilty of, since you may have been unaware, but deliberately leaving out a mortal sin in confession invalidates the sacrament (meaning the other sins would need to be confessed again to be absolved) and adds an additional mortal sin of sacrilege.

Your comment about the general confession also has me somewhat confused. Again, you should explain this whole situation to your priest for advice on what to do.

Go see a priest, and tell him your mortal sins, along with everything you wrote here. Don’t worry about how long it takes. The priest can help you.

First of all, God loves you and has always loved you. No forgetfulness in the Confessional can change that.

You might consider requesting Confessions by appointment. That way you won’t feel rushed. I suggest you prepare for the meeting with a thorough examination of conscience. If you forget anything, then just Confess it next time. In that way, you are always in God’s grace. You don’t need to doubt that.

Go to confession by appointment and tell the preist you have not mentioned these sins, and why. Let him guide you and feel the healing words of Absolution. Many have done as you have for various reasons (embarassment, shame, fear, etc)you won’t be the first.

Remember, it’s been said before on this forum, and I’ll say it again; priests have heard it ALL.

Do not be afraid and God Bless.

No, don’t get me wrong I’m not saying that he shouldn’t go to confession for something that isn’t mortal. Also, I wish it were as easy as saying, this is mortal this is venial. In my case, I have no idea if the poster has something that affects his issue here as well, I have Pure-O OCD, so to be honest I doubt I’ll ever be able to, in my mind, truly know the difference between venial and mortal sin. In my mind, everything that I do wrong is a mortal sin. It’s excruciating, and I can’t really do anything to turn it off. It’s my little cross and Into trying my best to carry it. I know some people just have a slight case of scruples that can be helped, which is why I mentioned it to the OP.

Hi. There’s something not quite right in your Confession, which can affect your receiving Holy Communion.

You should not confess only certain mortal sin and not confess the others. That would defeat the purpose of Confession where we come to Christ in repentance of our sins.

Why did you not want to confess your other mortal sins? You don’t have to go into details, just say the number and kind, unless Father asks for clarification.

God bless you.

In the mind, meaning an emotion? We should not willfully act or omit if there is reasonable doubt that an act or omission is a grave sin – that would be reckless. One is not culpable for what is involuntary and there is no mortal culpability for what is not fully (full reflection) consented to.

No, Vico, I do not mean to omit anything. What I have is a mental illness. It’s called Pure-O OCD. So I literally cannot tell the difference, my brain convinces me that all my sins are mortal ( even things that sometimes end up not being sins at all) so I just confess everything, which leads to super long confessions. My condition can get better, but OCD is never fully cured, and there is not really any medicine to help with it. I can be prescribed anxiety meds, but the thoughts and worries that come with it will never fully go away. It’s just how my brain works, and I can do very little about it. Someone could sit here and tell me “ it’s only a sin if you fully will it” and my brain will freak out wondering what “ to fully will it” means. It’ll run in circles until it convinces itself that I fully willed something. Like I was saying, not everyone has this, but if he has something more mild, like scruples, he should talk to his priest so he helps him with his confessions. This will bring him peace of mind and help him confess what he has to confess without being anxious.

Many people confess in far too great of detail.

Bless me father for I have sinned.

It has been X since my last confession.

I have sinned against the 1st Commandment X times.

Against the 2nd Commandment X times.

(Go through the commandments you have broken and the # of times.)

I have sinned against Charity X times.

For these and all my sins I am truly sorry and pray to amend my life and sin no more.

If the priest needs any detail he will ask for it.

Here is a 10 Commandments examine to use:

Yeah I felt the need to rush because there where many people waiting and the priest doesn’t have the time to hear it I keep forgetting one of the mortal sins I was going to confess.

I see :), we’ll in that case I agree with someone who posted a bit ago. Maybe you aught to make an appointment with a priest instead. This will assure you enough time. Also, try making a list so you don’t forget anything. You could even make the list on your phone so you can make sure to bring it with you! I wish you the best of luck Brolph! Our Lord knows you want to make a good confession. He’ll help you make one if you haven’t already!

Yes, I know what that is and it is not really free of compulsions for it is normally about managing reaction to intrusive thoughts.

To get an idea or normal, per my pastor: many people remain for long periods of time without mortal sins but venial are common failings.
