Worried I lied to God?

Earlier today (early afternoon, several hours before Mass), I think I committed the sin of gluttony (ate a whole lot of ice cream…it was on sale and was kind of my breakfast and lunch as it were). Later, at the Saturday Vigil Mass, I was worried that was that gluttony and, as gluttony, was a mortal sin of gluttony. I decided it was not mortal (I am still convinced it was not mortal) and received Communion.

Anyway, I sort of rationalized in my head during Mass that that “meal” earlier would be my food for the day. Then later, after Mass, I ate again and I am now worried that did I lie to God in my failed rationalization?

Obviously if this bothers you you should mention it in your next confession, but in the meanwhile you ought to reflect that God knows what our weaknesses are, and is not out to pounce on our every lapse, but help us overcome them.

Way back when I had returned to the Church after 17 years out, I was overly scrupulous in confessions at first and one time the priest told me in so many words and emphatically, that if I thought of another sin I had forgot to confess on my way home that day, to “FORGET IT!” I can never forget that day, as I went home, even the sky was more bright, my heart full of wonder. It did wonders for my prayer life! Up to then I thought of God as some distant Judge, impossible to please

I think you are basicly worried that, after having received Holy Communion, that God would show you by a scarey thought that you had done great wrong a few minutes ago. I just don’t think He does it that way. Scary thoughts, hopeless things, are generally either our own worries or even devil’s ideas. What is more likely to come from God, is some kind of mental help the next time you are faced with overindulging.

I am not sure that you are a glutton, perhaps imprudent, and a bit impulsive, but I think gluttony is something that takes over your life

Now if you did it every day, and if you took other peoples portions that would be different…It is good that you are thinking it wasn’t a good thing to do…You ate it instead of eating a meal, so that shows you did try to monitor what you did a bit

Tell Fr what happened, I think gluttony is something that you would do like making yourself throw up so you could eat even more…it might be a bit more a sin of being a bit greedy, than gluttony

Should/can I receive Communion today?

I would make a sincere act of contrition and receive …Everyone pigs out at least once in their lives…perhaps you can do a bit of penance to make up for it…donate a bit of money to a food cupboard, or try to say extra prayers for those without a job…remember God loves you

Please remove previous post of mine:

Apologize to God for being rash in saying you wouldn’t eat any more in the day, and know that he’s Mercy itself and understands your need to get some nutrition in your system.
