I start working for jc Penney tomorrow afternoon. I have finished with orention . We are trained to be pushy with opening up credit cards. That has bugged me as i am not a pushy person by nature. I don’t like to shove anything at anyone but I’m going to have to for my job. Is this in line with the church’s teachings? What would a priest advise?

You don’t have to be pushy. Nobody is going to make you be pushy. Just show up every day and work.

I love shopping JCP. Offer their credit card per customer and move on. Most people understand protocol.
Praying you have a successful time there.

@Catholic361

I worked for J. C. Penney’s 8 years ago, during the holidays. I hadn’t worked retail
for many years. Penney’s is fighting to stay afloat and doesn’t want to go the
way Sears did. So they are concerned about profits. Brace yourself for Black
Friday. Just be nice to the customers. You will see a lot and learn a lot about
people. They weren’t that bad to work for. Retail is stressful though.

A credit card is not a sinful thing when used properly. Perhaps when speaking to customers, stress the importance of paying the full balance by the statement date to avoid interest charges.

If you’re having trouble with sales in general, then this is not the job for you.

We are trained to be pushy with opening up credit cards.
Can you provide some examples? Are they encouraging any specific tactics that may be unethical or otherwise objectionable?

Also, is this permanent employment or a holiday job?

Honestly, I think your lines will be too long, and you’ll be too busy to utter much more than, “Would you like to save 10% [or whatever] today by opening a Penney’s card?”

Do what you need to do to not get fired. If you are not almost pushy you come off as tired, bored, or even against the card.

I worked in retail. I know the pain of no regular work schedule, less time off, being scheduled on a day you requested off, lifting 50 pound bags from one pallet to another one-by-one, getting questions from people and needing to direct them to a department desk without while having other tasks, and more.

As others have said, show up to work every day, on time, and do whatever your job requires. My son worked at JC and was making great money - but he thought he could call in sick one too many times. They are counting on you and all of their employees.

Apply for a different job.

It is unhealthy to hate your job - spiritually, mentally and physically.

Thank you for your encouraging words of advice and support i applied for job not thinking i would get it. I had mentally prepared myself for the "don’t call us, we’ll call you " i want the job but just don’t like that one thing about it.

It’s a holiday job that could become permanent, like I’m hoping that it will.

If that’s all you have to say, and you’re respectful to those who say no, I can’t see anything sinful. You’re not doing anything dishonest or uncharitable, and you leave people the choice.

Everywhere I shop the clerks are having to push their credit card, loyalty card, etc. I think consumers are used to it and will have no problem saying “no” if they don’t want it.
Good luck and congrats on getting the job!

Hi guys I survived “T,BF Days +1”
Your right i have learned a lot from my experiences so far only had to tell a customer who tried to go down the “up” escalator when it had gone down (stopped working) but I was still professional and kept everyone safe and out of the area until it was up to running again. But overall customers understood that and they were polite about it . Don’t work again until the end of next week.
