My grandma, who is 85 and not in the best of health said something today that has me very worried.

Here’s the situation, I will try to be brief. She has lived with my aunt and uncle for the last 15years or so. Now my aunt and uncle are good people, basically. But my aunt was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s about 8 years ago. Her mind has been getting worse lately. She is actually pretty far gone.

My uncle seems to be in denial. I totally understand why, his life has not turned out how he imagined it I suppose. Their oldest son had a heart condition, and had a massive heart attack, and multiple strokes 17 years ago. He in a mostly vegetative state and lives in a nursing home. Their daughter has been a constant disappointment, she only calls for money, is living with some alcoholic non-working loser, while her husband is in jail for a robbery she helped to plan. Her children steal from them, and have never been in school, nor are they properly homeschooled, she lives one step ahead of children’s service and most of the time we don’t even know where she is.

So uncle works, he cut down to three days a week, but still three days a week grandma is alone with my aunt. Obviously my aunt can not be left alone. She has started acting out in ways that my grandma says she scares her sometimes. Now, we have all suggested to my uncle they get someone to come in while he is at work. They have the insurance to pay for it. But he refuses to see they need help. He will not even so much as read a pamphlet about help for Alzheimer’s patients and families. He refuses to admit that there could be a problem at all.

They have no interest in religion, so trying to get a priest or other clergy to talk to him won’t help. He will not listen to me at all, he won’t listen to anyone. Grandma doesn’t want to upset anyone, so she won’t speak up to him. I have offered many times for her to come live with us, we do have an extra room, but she will not leave my aunt alone, and is afraid she will hurt herself if she isn’t there. I feel my uncle would step up if no one was there to deal with my aunt.

I’m just so worried, grandma says she gets mad and throws things. Yells, screams, hits and will take off on a walk by herself. This worries my grandma, then she ends up walking around the neighborhood looking for her. She can barely walk alone to the bathroom, she is weak and suffers from vertigo that can make her loose her balance.

I don’t know what I can do to make sure grandma is OK. I have to work and can’t be there during the day. I can’t force her to move in with me. I can’t talk to my uncle and make him see reality. Please pray that all will be OK and my aunt won’t end up hurting herself or my grandma one day. And any ideas on anything I can do to help would be great.

The worry you must be going through!

I will pray for you, for your entire family!

God Bless You!

People that are 85 can be very strong people, strong in wisdom and/strong physically. I think perhaps it would be best to wait until grandmother makes a decision, and that is what I would pray for. If you think that grandmother needs more reassurance as to what life would be like at your place, you might attempt to help assuage her fears, so that her options would be clear to her. It might be that you don’t know the details that keep her there. Keep her informed of options: We have an Alzheimer’s daycare in our town. Please God help grandmother and bring the family back to the fold. Visiting the person in the nursing home, maybe sharing times like this with grandmother will help her to know that you are on her side.

If they won’t listen to reason or seek religion for comfort there doesn’t seem to be much more you can do. It’s a shame grandma won’t come to your place. Sounds like you have done all you can do. I’ll offer prayer for you and your family. Amen

I take it the aunt is her daughter? And you’re asking a mother to leave her increasingly helpless child alone to be preyed on or to wander off.

Ain’t gonna happen.

Those three days a week, maybe your mom can bring someone in for herself for “company” but whose real purpose is to watch your aunt.

Call social services in that town and maybe make an anonymous report about two elderly women out wandering around.

Or take grandma and auntie to the doctor and have the doctor call your uncle and tell him man to man how serious it is getting.

It’s listen now, or hear the story from the EMTs who came because someone slipped on the ice or got run over in traffic.

Your mother needs to see the need to speak up. That it won’t be hurting anyone. That for her daughter to get proper help, she needs to see a doctor. There are medicines she could be taking to help the situation a little bit. She needs to be proactive. Otherwise, is she waiting for something terrible to happen before anyone gets help?

Good luck. This is such a sad story. I feel bad for everyone involved. 😦

My heart goes out to you, and know I will be praying for you tonight…

This story reminds me of my grandma and how she used to drive me to distraction when she insisted on doing what she thought was right over what I thought was safe. Support her, spend every minute you can with her and above all cherish her. You have to allow her to live her own life and if she decides to stay then you need only to make sure she knows she has options and gently as best you can support her.

I would go one step further and see if there is a nieghbor or someone close by that she can call if things get bad also make sure she has a way to contact you in any event as well as the police should your aunt become violent.
