You should advise her, particular if she is around him alot, and try to prepare her to defend her faith and not falter in it.

My son was quite involved, or committed to Asatru. This was after his tour in the military so he was no kid.

I never took it seriously, it’s just a bunch of inventive nonsense I would scoff at. The fact that I did not take it seriously peeved him but my position was you cannot recreate a religion, it will never be authentic…it’s not like a science fair project.

He eventually abandoned it, but the escapade lasted for at least five years.

I didn’t realize Thor was still actively worshipped… I myself have some experience with the Eddas and Norse myths, but I had no idea that anyone still took them seriously. Makes me wonder if anyone still worships Zeus…
I’m not sure if they really believe in the norse gods. I think it’s just the wish to follow the path of their ancestors and to go back to the “old ways”. I think many neopagans see paganism as the original belief of their ancestors and Christianity as a foreign religion. So they want to go back to what they think is their true identity. They just forget that their ancestors have recanted paganism and have embraced Christianity voluntarily.

If not ‘recreate’, could one ‘create’ an authentic religion?

St Augustine: “Let me tell you Jesus of Nazareth.”
Saxon heathen: “Who? Of where?”
SA: “The son of God who died for your sins.”
SH: “Everything I have ever known and believed is wrong.”

St. Augustine “converted” the English in/around 597-601 A.D. Then after they slipped back into heathenism in 616, had to be reconverted in/around 695. Then, in the 11th Century (~300 years later!) King Canute had to enact laws against the practice of the heathen religion. It doesn’t sound like a “voluntary” embracing of Christianity. (Google “conversion of england”)

In truth, Christianity was spread across Europe by:
Threats - “Convert, or we will not allow any Christian nation to trade with you.” (As serious a threat then as it would be today.)
Lies - “Let me tell you the truth about your gods. They aren’t mine, so they are wrong/evil.”
Force - “Convert, or you’ll have to be tortured. Or burned alive. Or killed in some other horrific manner.”

Then, as many references as possible to the old religion were destroyed so that the people wouldn’t “relapse” again.

But despite all this, knowledge of the old gods survived. Fragmentary in many cases - a tribute to the thoroughness with which the Christians did their cleaning - and based on amalgamations of several closely related cultures (Germanic, English, Scandinavian), but it survived. I wonder if Christianity would survive over a millenium of that kind of suppression…

Having said all that, I do believe that Thor-boy at work (likely Wiccan, not true heathen) needs to keep his trap shut. It IS harassment. Of course, for the girl to retaliate by trying to convert him (in the workplace and/or without invitation) would just make her as wrong as him.

Aldulf, please do explain to me how St. Augustine converted England. He was the bishop of Hippo, which is in Africa.

Please spare me these Thor-worshipping pansies. Anyone worth an inkblot on Walt Simonson’s drawing table knows that the better hammer-slinger is, and always will be, BETA RAY BILL.

Repent, you list heathens, lest you spend your eternity as Volstagg’s hemorrhoid cushion!

Sister, you need to pray earnestly in Jesus name for your daughter in spiritual warfare and that princepalities of Satan would be bound and not deceive her.
The fact that this man is phsycic means witchcraft is all over this.

Interesting to see how Christians, who get normally nuts when someone ridicules their beliefs, their religion, or their god, have no problems to ridicule other beliefs, religions, and gods. Must have something to do with specks and beams. 🤷

Let’s test this with a nice pagan song:
“Odin heißt unser Gott, der hat zwei Raben
Jesus, der war anders, umgeben von zwölf Knaben”

Roughly translates to:
“Odin is our god, he has two ravens
Jesus was different, accompanied by twelve knaves”

Why is it in German? To the best of my limited knowledge Odin was not a Germanic god at all. Surely it would be Woden? Or is this a modern reconstructionist’s song?

That is the same god. Well, depends on whom you ask, some say Wodan is a different god, but Wodan is more or less the southern form of Odin, like Jupiter is the Roman version of Zeus.
Btw. - the Norse are Germanic.

Yes.

Acknowledged but I was wondering why they have used a foreign name for their god.

You’re right of course. I need to pick my words more carefully. What I meant by Germanic was ‘‘German speaking’’.
Fair enough.

Or even better why anyone thinks the current christian “God” is any more real than the norse gods. I don’t see anything that makes the christian god any more real than the norse gods.

I just wanted to point out that this thread is more than three years old, so the daughter and her co-worker have probably parted ways by now.

That has several reasons. Firstly there are far more references to Odin in written records than to Wodan. Secondly, which ist more or less the reason for the first one, the broad and common belief in Wodan dies somewhere in the 9th century (there was a death penalty issued by Charlemagne on worshipping Wodan in what is now known as Germany), while the belief in Odin continued in Scandinavia until the 11th century. Thus Odin is culturally more advanced, and we know a lot more about him than about his southern “version”.
Since people became interested in those gods somewhere in the 19th century, Odin is more commonly used than Wodan because of those reasons.

Odin has dozens of names anyway, some even say that Hödur (Höðr) who is usually seen as a different god is in fact Odin in disguise. You probably know the myth of Hödur killing Baldr.
