Raymond Arroyo of EWTN chose Miley Cyrus. Who’s your pick?

That was my first thought, too. She used to be such a good role model for little girls. I’m so disappointed that she trashed all that and let her fans down.

Really? EWTN and/or Raymond Arroyo are saying this? Link please. This doesn’t seem like a very Catholic thing to do, focusing on the negative and singling out an individual. How about we leave this kind of thing for the secular gossip rags?

Presiding Bishop Schori of the Episcopal Church -she is destroying it

Robin Thicke. I hate hate HATE that horribly degrading song of his that’s always on the radio, Blurred Lines. Sorry buddy. There ain’t no blurry line here. “No” means no, you creep. And so many kids are walking around singing this junk!! :banghead:

I agree.

At one point, (Protestant) bloggers were even predicting a new “Great Awakening” heralded by young “role models” such as her and the Jonas Brothers.

I guess that dream died young. Which is a pity. 😦

I agree, do we really need to waste more time on Miley Cyrus? Her situation is actually more tragic than anything, her parents divorced, I think she is estranged from her father and then wants to act out in the name of being herself which only draws more attention to herself. Maybe Raymond Arroyo should ask for prayers for her instead of calling her the worst celeb.

I’ll agree with the poster who said Robin Thicke. It bothered me that so many people were so quick to criticize Miley for her performance at the MTV awards, yet there was hardly any mention of Robin’s part in the whole thing. And Blurred Lines was disgusting, although to be fair…it was tame compared to much of the popular rap music coming out these days.

In any case, we should be offering prayers for these people and hope that they will turn to God and become better role models.

True, his stuff isn’t as explicit as some of the other rap out there. But most of the really offensive rap you have to seek out on certain stations, whereas Robin’s song is played everywhere (malls, grocery stores) on practically every station. (At least where I live.) Which is why I have more of a problem with it I guess. It seems more harmful because it’s reaching so many more people.

But I agree, we should be praying for celebrities. I really dislike all the hate Miley gets also. What she did was wrong but the poor girl was forced into the limelight when she was only 12 or 13. Who wouldn’t crack and rebel after all that stress and manipulation? She never got to be a normal kid. 😦

Miley Cyrus’ parents, managers, agents, producers, The Disney Channel and anyone else who exploits kids who end up like her, or any of her teen predecessors: Britney, Bieber, Lindsay, the list is long…

Instead of calling somebody the worst…especially on a public forum on the internet…wouldnt it be kinder to remember that they are human and have feelings that can be hurt like anybody else…and that they are a child of god made in his image…and if we dont like their behaviour we should pray for them so that one day they reach heaven

Remember the bible says judge not lest ye be judged…and it also says let he who is without sin cast the first stone

I was Evangelical Protestant for 47 years before converting to Catholicism.

Evangelical Protestants have a tendency to jump on what I called “bandwagons”–rallying behind the latest celeb (author, singer, actor, politician, artist, athlete, etc.) who appears to be helping spread the Gospel of Christ.

The bandwagons roll along while more and more Christians jump on board, and then the bandwagon either slows to a halt, or crashes, or goes over the cliff. I think the Miley Cyrus bandwagon went over the cliff spectacularly.

My daughter, who is a professional stage manager, gave me a prayer card while she was home for the holidays. It’s for the Fraternity of St. Genesius, and urges Christians to pray daily for those in the theatrical and cinematic arts. Here’s a link: stgenesius.com/

Hmm, then you must be an expert on the topic! I have some Evangelical Protestant friends, but they’re all around my age or a little older, and they’re not really into Western pop music anyway. (They do love CCM though.) 🙂

I think that comes from the influence of local (i.e. American) culture, more than anything else. Sometimes it reaches near-canonization, as when a celebrity who speaks for Christ or against “gay marriage” is immediately described in martyr-like terms. 😉

It was coming from a mile off; the danger signals were telegraphed from the moment of the controversial photo shoot she undertook years ago, as I see it. 😃

Hadn’t heard of him so far! Thanks for sharing it, I’ll look it up. 👍
