Washerwoman God is gender neutral? May we please have the full reference on this landmark of Christian spirituality?
Father was refering to the song about diversity in the above quote, not to “Washerwoman God.” The “diversity song” is in the Missalette hymnal, so it must be a contemporary song.

Here’s a link for more on “Washerwoman God”:

What’s that syncopated song in Gather that has the “Oooh”? Gag sputter.
According to Why Catholics Can’t Sing by Thomas Day, the song might be “All I Ask of You” by Gregory Norbet (he mentions it specifically on p.72, complete with “Oooo’s”.

Fortunately I have never heard or sung this song so I can’t say for sure that this is it.

I found the “Diversity Song.” It’s called “Sing A New Church.” It is one of the many liturgical gems in the Breaking Bread Missalette.

This site helped to explain it all to me:

Hi I’m new here. There’s always been one song in particular that has irritated me. It’s called “Bread of Life” by Rory Cooney. The refrain:
Code:
I myself am the bread of life
you and I are the bread of life
taken and blessed, broken and shared
by Christ
that the world may live.
I refuse to sing that nonsense. Later in the song the precious Body and Blood are referred to as, “our body our blood.”

It’s really a disgrace.

Thanks everyone for getting that horrible “Gather Us In” song going through my head now—as well as the “I Myself Am The Bread of Life” song.

At my church we sometimes sing this dreadful Allelluia that goes something like:

Alle…Alle…Allelluia
Alle…Alle…Allelluia
Oh…Alle…Alle…Alleluia
Alle Alle Alle Alle Luia
Oh Alle Alle Alle Alle Luia

The melody to it sounds like something that would be played in between pitches at a baseball game.

Also there’s a song and I can’t remember how it goes exactly now–I haven’t heard it in a while but at my old parish, it was played every time there was a baptism. There was a verse sung by the cantor and then everyone was to sing “Come to the water!” and another verse by the cantor followed by “Come to the feast!” Does anyone else know what that was?

Is this the one that absolutely sounds like it should have a musical accompaniment of Jamaican steel drums?

If so, my choir has to sing that occasionally, and I always feel like an idiot singing it. I mean, that song really, really doesn’t go with pipe organ and traditional choir! :bigyikes: It’s even worse when those of us who aren’t sopranos attempt to sing the alto/tenor/bass parts. It sounded so bad, we all gave up and started singing the melody.

Actually that particular Alleluia (It’s actually “Halle, halle, halle”, not Alle, alle, alle…) is SUPPOSED to be done with jamaican steel drums and the like. It was originally written for a musical presentation (performed outside of Mass) which I happened to see back in the early 1990’s. It sounded wonderful in that context.

It sounds completely absurd with with a pipe organ and traditional choir and should be avoided at all costs for use in a traditional setting.

No–not the same one, though I know what one you’re talking about.

The one I mean sounds a little more like an off-key version of the Mexican Hat Dance.

Played with organ I feel like I’m at the ballgame waiting for the next pitch to be thrown.

I think it would sound nice with the appropriate instrumentation. But I agree, completely absurd with pipe organ and choir. Especially the rest after each “Halle”. At the spot where the steel drums would still be playing, all you get with the choir and organ is dead silence. I can just tell that the congregation feels as stupid singing it as we do. Maybe I’ll have a little chat with the choir director the next time that one is scheduled. 😃

Definitely start to worry if you ever hear “seventh inning stretch” music being played after Communion! 😃

I have to say that this thread has completely cracked me up with all your comments. But seriously, I like most of the songs mentioned here. I suppose that is just a side effect of growing up with the *Gather *hymnal and similar songs.

There, there, maryalene. It’s OK. We have a 12-step program for that.

Ok, this thread is giving me a great laugh. For one reason, some of these phrases are just hillarious. But I will confess the other reason too - I have some really fond memories of some of the songs that made the list (Wade in the Water, “Olly olly olly lu-u-ia”) Ok, I can see how this could really make you cringe, especially during mass, but oh the memories…! And I have to admit I still really like a lot of the “glory and praise” songs (at least that’s the book I learned them from), like Sing to the Mountains, Though the Mountains May Fall, Eagles Wings, and Here I am Lord. Now in fairness to all of your preferences, I will say that I enjoy the more traditional sounding hymns we sing at the Church I usually go to now. But I guess when you’re brought up in a hippie throwback Church, it’s hard not to like the music that was the (as was earlier quoted) “fabric of our lives” 😃
**Wade in the water? the old slave song?
thats not even a real hymm, it was a code song to tell the slaves where to go for the pickup point. if they sang about water, it meant hide in the river and our connection will meet you there. and at night it was sung all over, so the wandering slaves would hear it and know what to do. whats the next one,
ain’t nobody here but us chickens?

If that’s the same song I’m thinking of, it was written by Fr. Richard Ho-Lung, a very holy and orthodox priest originally from Southeast Asia (I think Thailand?) who converted from the Buddhist faith to first the Baptist Faith, then to Catholicism. He started a very vibrant order of priests, The Missionaries of the Poor: missionariesofthepoor.org/ in Jamaica (of all places!) and wrote some very vibrant music for a Caribbean Mass: missionariesofthepoor.org/music___books.htm
I saw it performed at the LA religious education congress in 2002. Fr. Ho-Lung gave a very hard-hitting homily to the large crowd and I think he wasn’t invited back again!
Fr. Ho-Lung has been on EWTN several times (The Journey Home, and others), and is scheduled to appear on Catholic Answers Live next month: catholic.com/radio/calive.asp?date=9/1/2005

Andrew Lloyd Weber can write catchy songs but he is a lousy theologian. JC Superstar** (for anyone who has never seen it) is Jesus’ story told from the perspective of Judas Iscariot, who even in the end still did not figure it out (according to ALW). I will never understand why we were led to sing the blasphemous verses which were allegedly proclaimed by Judas as he watched Jesus being crucified.

Actually, Andrew Lloyd Webber didn’t write those lyrics, Tim Rice did

ONE MORE - NOBODY’S MENTIONED It:

“HOW CAN I KEEP FROM SINGING”!

I will never be able to keep from thinking about all the songs mentioned here - never knew they annoyed others as much as myself.
Ha! I was wondering myself why no one had yet mentioned it!
How can I keep from cringing!!!

I am guessing I am in the minority here, but I actually like alot of the songs being bashed here! Maybe its because I cantor and I enjoy singing so much that I automatically like the song I am singing. Also, my husband is a guitar player at Mass and plays some of the songs with a different chord progression and changes the beat a little. If we are ever on vacation and go to Mass out of town, I hear the same songs and think “They are doing it wrong!” but then I remember its just different and I like how we do it better.

“How can I keep from singing” on Enya–Watermark is beautiful…but again, different chords and timing. Those things make a big difference.

I’ve got that Joy Joy Joy Joy down in my heart, down in my heart to stay…And if the devil doesn’t like it he can sit on a tack, sit on a tack today.

I used to endure that one regularly in the Los Angeles Diocese. I sometimes find talk of “hymns” v. “songs” annoying, but if that doggerel doesn’t take the cake…

I agree with the poster who dislikes, “not in some heaven light years away.”
I would laugh if that wasn’t so disgusting. Of all of the things I have seen at some masses in my live, these two songs I have never heard except in the preschool class in the Social Hall accross the lot.
