Worst Hymn/Song Lyric Heard at Mass

A Mighty Fortress is the most awful, anti-Catholic, Protestant, Lutheran dribble ever written!! It should never be played within 5 square miles of a Catholic Church, much less sung in heaven. Amazing Grace has gotta’ go, and while we’re at it, how about “Here I am to Worship” and some of the rest of these praise team jump up and down and clap bits of garbage. Makes we want to beat the guitar players with their own instruments when I hear it. Yuck-O. Long live Immaculate Mary and Hail Holy Queen.

Wow Affirmed. after reading the above, If I weren’t already in love w/ the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostilic Church I’d be scared to death if I were a newcomer here discerning whether or not to come into the Church…😦

I don’t see how disliking certain music in Mass has anything to do with beign more Catholic than the Catholic Church. If it’s the bit about the musicians, it was meant in jest. Especially since I am a church musician! An organist to be exact. And I would hope that if you were a newcomer discerning whether or not to come into the church that you would not let someone’s opinion about liturgical music on an internet message board make your decision for you.

I am at a loss. I only know the first verse off hand and it contains nothing anti-Catholic. As far as whether or not it dribbles (whatever that means) I wouldn’t know.

Annunciata made that comment because “A Mighty Fortress” is an approved hymn by the Catholic Church.

I was referring to your rant… and I am a convert to the Faith…I try to keep in mind some of the things that hurt me as a Protestant…that’s all…Lots of non-Catholics come onto this forum looking for Catholic Answers… not getting hit over the head w/ a guitar because you don’t find a certain hymn acceptable.
 
Goodness, I had forgotten many of those hymns, and am very happy my current parish doesn’t use them. We do use a hymnal which is Roman Catholic, but English. I think some (maybe many) are traditional originally Protestant hymns. I’m not really sure, but it’s approved for use in RC churches, and has lots of Latin which we also use in copious amounts so it doesn’t bother me. I love our music.
 
Any song I heard in a Protestant church. “Lord of the Dance”, all I can hear is the “Shaker Song” which isn’t a bad song, but, it’s NOT Catholic. Refrain:

When true simpicity is gained
To bow & to bend we shant be ashamed
To turn, turn, will be our delight
'Til by turning, turning, we come round right.

I feel compelled to state that I sang this as a freshman at a Dutch Reformed School. Dutch Reformed (& Christian Reformed, I don’t know the difference) is a branch of Calvinism. The Shakers, I don’t believe, embodied either the Calvinists or the Catholic beliefs.

I REALLY don’t like those clappy snappy songs, either. 😦 I remember talking online to a kid (21 or so at the time) who hated this as well!! They do not belong at Mass. That is NOT what Mass is about. One is taking the focus point off of God at Mass with these songs.

The “old satanic foe” was Luther’s stab at the early Church. “Though hordes of devils fill the land” is a reference to the priests, bishops, and Church leaders which Luther was ralling against. “God’s word forever shall abide, no thanks to those who fear it”. Same thing, Luther thought that the Church feared the Bible because it would usurp their authority. “Were they to take our house, good, honored child or spouse, though life be wrenched away, they cannot win the day, the kingdom’s our forever.” The indulgences Luther hated so much, being sold… land taken in exchange, etc. That is what the song is about. It is, in a sense, the battle hymn of the Reformation. Although I know it doesn’t appear that way. As for the guitar comment, which I have already explained was in jest, I doubt seriously that many people would be turned away from the faith because of one single line of sarcasm.

No problem, I had no idea until I did some research on the song. Then confirmed the facts with another Cathlolic organist and the priest he works for. 🙂

Well, no matter. The Liturgy of the Hours has only three verses, which should be the safe sections which can be sung without anti-Catholic bias. Hence this is another example of the Church’s obeying the Scripture’s command: “Reject what is evil, hold fast to what is good.” Even Martin Luther’s battle hymn can be filtered to suit Catholic worship.

“Simple Gifts” is popular to hear playing in the background at bookstores (the Shaker song). I like America the Beautiful better than some of the other recessionals.

Now, if only we can apply this method to that song, which thanks to this thread, I know the title to be “Song of the People of God.”

Maybe we could all make our hands into churches and show off our steeples and open them up and see all the people…right in sync as we sing this song:

“It’s hard to dance with the devil on your back.” Very inspiring, indeed!

That is the one song I absolutely refuse to sing.
 
Please go over to the “Amazing Grace” thread and read the history of this hymn. And try to be a little sensitive. I’m a convert to the Catholic faith–was Presbyterian/Lutheran for 50 years, with evangelical leanings. You’re not going to win any converts by unkind attitudes like these posts. There is nothing in Amazing Grace that is contrary to the Catholic faith. The composer was a devout Christian, a slave trader, who had a “Damascus road” conversion experience which changed his life. We all see by the light the Lord gives us, and we have no right to question the grace He gives to other people. Musical tastes differ, and we have a right to our own, but “Amazing Grace” is one of my own favorite hymns–it brings me to tears. I also love “A Mighty Fortress”, although I periodically get extremely upset with Luther and have to pray to forgive him for what he did, since I came to the Church because of the Eucharist–something I had never heard of because of what the “reformers” did. The Eucharist means everything to me. I could let this make me extremely bitter. I also love “Hail Holy Queen Enthroned Above”–which of course I’d never heard before Sister Act, thanks to the same Reformation…it’s a wonderful hymn!
So…I have standing to complain about people bashing Protestants on this board–please don’t do it.

I can take it or leave it, but our late pastor loved it for Masses with children, and when we sang it at his funeral we all broke down and I can’t hear it now without crying. Such a blessed holy man.

Gather Us In has to take first place as most obnoxious song, knocking They’ll Know We are Christians and Kumbaya out of the top spot. “Peace is Flowing Like a River Flowing out of you and me” is my personal vomit-inducer.

All Are Welcome is also a contender. It would be especially appropriate on an occassion when rainbow-sashers or pro-abort politicians are planning to publicly attempt to receive communion from a pastor determined to enforce Church teaching on the Eucharist.

And seat licensing for each hymn. Is the lyric connected to the music? Is the person connected to the song? How many people are connected to the lyric and the music? OK, fork over a license fee for each of the above, lasting one year in duration, provided the OEM key has been used for installation and registration with Microsoft has occured via the Internet. And what version? 6.0? FAT or NTFS? The only good about it would BE a music stoppage!

Hopefully, we will then have a lovely Linux series. Can’t beat the penguin!
