Worst movie ever: EXODUS: GODS & KINGS

That’s a terrible review, couldn’t you have picked a better negative review than that? I didn’t think Prometheus was awful either.

Sorry you didn’t like it.

But, being adults of differing discerning taste, maybe some will want to make a critical determination on their own.

I’ve read reviews where critics have claimed the Catholic Church is evil and the Pope is the anti-Christ, but had I taken their review of the one holy, catholic, and apostolic Church
as fact rather than opinion, I would be lost today.

I didn’t either, in fact, I loved it quite a bit, and think it is an excellent movie. There’s actually a video on youtube that works through people’s complaints about the movie one at a time, and after watching that I actually think Prometheus is one of the best thought out movies in recent years ^^
 
Yup; I see it, largely, as Greydanus does in his review. I’m a little less inclined to give the writers a break on Malak’s outbursts (after all, even if he is a ‘messenger’, in the OT sense, he is still the voice of God; and God in the OT talks about His anger, but doesn’t rant to humans 🤷).

Nevertheless, I think I’d recommend the movie to my Bible study class – not on the basis of a completely faithful rendition of the book of Exodus, but as an opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in class, and as a means to see whether they’re ready to apply it to the representations that come their way in daily life.

“Worst movie ever”? Nah… Noah still wins that one, this year…
 
I’m not going to make judgements on only one of the reviews, one of those comments at the bottom likes the movie. Isn’t it going overboard a bit to write this is the worse movie ever?? Rather harsh.

This is a good reason as to why in the news forums in CA, one posts the headline from the story and not their own editorialized view.
 
I’m pretty sure Plan 9 From Outer Space and Manos:The Hands of Fate are still the worst movies ever made.

But yeah, Exodus:G&K looks pretty bad.

The reason I will not see it, is the fact it is not accurate according to the Bible. Glenn Beck’s review said the special effects were great but you would never recognize Moses from what we learned in the Bible. Moses is like a terrorist; God is an 11 yr. old boy who makes tea for Moses & Moses won’t even listen to him; Pharaoh is kinder than Moses; The Nile turning to blood is caused by crocodiles eating people; Aaron is not mentioned; the pillar of fire looked like a sparkler; the miracle of parting the Red Sea was reduced to ‘low tide’ …
After hearing this I don’t want to waste my money or time on a movie that is actually against my beliefs! :tsktsk:

I’ll re-watch “The Ten Commandments.” C.B. D 'mille believed in God.

I would not recommend a movie full of error to my Bible study class. I had my CCD students watch “The Ten Commandments.” It follows the Bible accurately! 👍

The review says Moses wrestled with God but Genesis 32:24 says Jacob wrestled with “God”.

P.S. - why give your money & time to falsehood. I’ll take the word of many reviewers who say the movie is …bad!

Really? Didn’t the Ten Commandments movie render Moses stutter-free, leaves out Moses’ disobeying God’s instruction about the rock, Moses’ wife Sephorah is from the tribe of Midian, in the film she is identified as a descendant of Ishmael, Moses competes with Rameses for Nefertiri; and the Hebrew slave master forces Joshua’s girlfriend to marry him.
 
Maybe the movie is inaccurate, maybe it is sacrilegious even but if this is the issue, how about “The last temptation of Christ” and so I hear, there are even worse movies of these type.

Just because Jacob wrestled with God doesn’t mean that Moses did not do so as well. 🤷 Of course, with Moses, it is more of a figurative “wrestling.” But it is not an inaccurate description.

I’m not saying the movie is not bad. It wouldn’t surprise me if it were. But “worst movie ever” is a tad hyperbolic. That would mean this one movie is worse than all of the tens of thousands of movies that have come before it. I find that hard to believe. Which makes it harder for me to take the criticism seriously.

I won’t be giving my money to them. I get most of my movies from the library after they come out on DVD. I will probably do the same with this one.

The effects that I saw in the trailer and TV promo’s are AWFUL.

But then Glenn Beck would be the LAST person I would take advice from for anything.

This is the second time, “I’ve seen,” Moses being casted as a brutal general warrior and not as the servant and messenger of God.

The television show, battles BC" Had the same story.

Do yourself a favor and support a real Christian movie like

Moses as a warrior is not a motif that is completely foreign to the Bible, though. Recall, he did kill the Egyptian who struck the Hebrew. And also, after the golden calf incident, he called together the faithful ones (the Levites) and had them grab their swords and strike down about 3000 men who had been worshipping the golden calf.

Not to say that I trust Ridley Scott to give an accurate account of a biblical story. I don’t. But I think a lot of times we expect sanitized versions of the Bible stories that are every bit as unbiblical.

I wouldn’t say that. He came across more like a freedom fighter, but he quickly realized those tactics weren’t working.

Actually, the movie makes clear that the boy is not God. He’s an angel. I personally had mixed feelings about that character. There were some things I liked and some I didn’t.

Moses does argue with him a lot, that’s true. By the end though, the movie does seem to imply that Moses has a real friendship with God. I would have liked it if they focused a little more on that, but oh well.

I’m not sure Glenn Beck and I watched the same movie. Pharaoh hangs a family of Hebrew slaves everyday to try and convince them to hand over Moses. He more than doubled the work load of the slaves to build a monument to himself, and treated them worse than the previous pharaoh. When the locusts came and ate the crops, he wasn’t willing to give up his own store of food to help his own citizens who were starving, and even executed some of them. Right before the death of the first-born, he made a vow saying he was going to murder every Hebrew boy again like his father did. I don’t know, to me, he didn’t come across as a good guy. He started out as one, but power quickly corrupted him.

That’s what God uses in the movie to turn it to blood, yes. But the movie makes clear that it is God’s doing. It’s not random.

Actually it was a tsunami. And it came right after Moses prayed and said he needed help. I would have rather seen it the biblical way, but this still had a fifty foot wall of water wash away the Egyptians, so it was close enough for me. 😉

It’s not a perfect movie, there were some things that bugged me. (the Malak kid mostly, and the fact that Moses was never sent to Pharaoh.) But I felt it was at least respectful overall of the biblical narrative. Unlike Noah.
 
I think there are lots of Bible fanboys who will confuse artistic liberty with heresy. The director is very clear that his goal in the movie was to create a portrayal of the Moses and the Exodus that reflected a historical basis from which the biblical account could have been reasonably extrapolated, or “mythologized” by Biblical writers.

So let me get this straight–God actually shows up in the movie, and miracles do happen, but because it’s not exactly like the account of the Bible, it’s a total cinematic failure?
