Worst Winter Holiday Song by an Ex-Beatle 3.0

Now that we are into December, we’re starting to hear Christmas music on the radio (for those of us who still listen to the radio). And you may have one of those seasonal “All Christmas Music, All The Time” radio stations. So now it’s time for a special expanded version of a poll I first posted a few years ago: Worst Holiday Song by an Ex-Beatle. The contributions from John and Paul are typically in heavy rotation, whereas the ones from George and Ringo are rarities. (You can find them on YouTube, along with an awesome video for “Ding Dong, Ding Dong”).
 
I voted for McCartney’s, because it is the most commonly heard. I hate, berate, and abominate that song :vomitemojihere:

Agree. He wrote the most heinous songs.
I just want to punch him.
And the radio.

I vote John Lennon - mostly because it seems less a Christmas song than an opportunity to exercise activism.

And thanks for the info - I don’t think I’ve ever heard George’s or Ringo’s Christmas song so I listened to them on youtube.
 
I voted for Paul’s although upon reflection John certainly deserves an honorable mention, if only because it features Yoko Ono’s shrieky vocals.
 
There are times I’m glad my radio station is simply the weather channel with the same weather music every 10 minutes.
 
I voted for Paul McCartney for epically underacheiving. The John Lennon one, I don’t like so well, but musically it’s your basic 3-chord anthem type song. Fairly bland and inoffensive musically, but it’s played to death and I’m sick of its preachiness. Paul McCartney has much more pop songwriting talent, and yet he managed to come up with that drek. The synthesizer must have been the new toy in the studio that year. Yuck!

The only other pop Christmas song that comes to mind as equally bad is the George Michael “Last Christmas, I gave you my heart… and the very next day, you tore it apart” or however that goes. The Mariah Carey “All I want for Christmas… is yooouuuu!” is also up there.

And for the record I like “Ding Dong, Ding Dong”. It rocks kind of.

Yoko’s vocal contribution was the reason I voted for John’s tune.

Another bad one is the Beach Boys Christmas song, “Little St. Nick” or whatever it’s called. Sounds like they just took “Little Deuce Coup” and changed a few chords and made the lyrics to sound vaguely Christmasy.

This is an actual lyric from the song “Christmas comes this time each year” …Yes. Yes it does. I’m pretty sure most holidays are annual come to think of it.

The Beach Boys have an entire Christmas album, including that song and a few others. It’s a shame the Beatles never made a Christmas album, that would have been interesting.

I don’t have much Christmas music on my iPod but I do have that album - it adds a little nostalgic glow to the room.

A Beatles Christmas album would have been interesting. Maybe all of them collaborating together would have stopped these songs from ever existing…

That or they would have just made even worse ones.

I dread having to go Christmas shopping because the stores will be playing all those awful “Christmas” songs (which mostly have nothing to do with Christmas). When I’m tired and stressed out from not being able to find certain gift items, and the mall is crowded, I certainly don’t want to hear “Simply having a wonderful Christmas time…”

Yeah, I think it was hearing this song played incessantly at malls and department stores made me realize how truly awful it is. Partly because when I’m at the mall, I’m stressed and anxious and just want to get my stuff and get out, and most certainly not having a wonderful Christmastime!
 
As much as I dislike Paul McCartney’s song, I hate Lennon’s song worse than a third degree sunburn. At least with “Wonderful Christmastime,” the only time you hear it is when they play the original. However, it’s almost mandatory that any pop act who comes out with a Christmas album now do a cover of that other atrocity. As a result, it’s played on the radio far more often than “Wonderful Christmastime.”

As far as the other two go, Ringo’s song is just a cover of one of the Beatles’ fan club Christmas records from back in the 60s. I don’t think I’ve ever heard Ringo’s version on the radio, although I’ve heard the original a couple times. I’m not a fan of either, but I don’t hate it as much as the Lennon and McCartney songs. I’ve never heard George Harrison’s song on the radio and didn’t even know it existed until a year or two ago. I kind of like it.

I didn’t know that was the origin of Ringo’s song. I’m listening to it now and thinking, wow this is repetitive. Couldn’t they have come up with any better lyrics. He does call out “Jesus loves ya!” in there. I was probably at a loss for Ringo-related holiday songs when I posted the poll. But thanks to YouTube, I just came up with Ringo singing “The Christmas Dance”. It’s actually kind of good, has a little bit of the early Beatles sound. Quite a few others coming up on YouTube, appears he put out an album called “I wanna be Santa Claus”.

And yeah, I like Ding Dong, Ding Dong. The accompanying video is strangely awesome. I like how he cycles through various Beatles-era gimmicks and costumes, as well as about 6 guitars, including the Rickenbacker 12 string, and he progressively piles them up to his right.
