Another conversation about this matter veered away from the central issue as I see it, and I hope someone may be able to clarify that for me. It is certainly sinful to lie to one’s confessor during the sacrament of Confession, but what degree of sin is it, and has the Church’s view of this matter changed over time? In particular, does anyone know whether in Geneva, Switzerland, in the late eighteenth century this was or might have been considered a mortal sin?
