Would a false Confession be a serious sin?

Another conversation about this matter veered away from the central issue as I see it, and I hope someone may be able to clarify that for me. It is certainly sinful to lie to one’s confessor during the sacrament of Confession, but what degree of sin is it, and has the Church’s view of this matter changed over time? In particular, does anyone know whether in Geneva, Switzerland, in the late eighteenth century this was or might have been considered a mortal sin?

Yes it is a mortal sin to lie about something so important. It is also a mortal sin of sacrilege. This is not something the Catholic Church would waver on. You might want to check with a Protestant web site for information regarding Geneva in the eighteenth century.
