Would a house built on top of a graveyard be haunted?

Do you mean a former grave yard? I don’t think anyone would be allowed to build on ground with the coffins still buried there.

All the buildings we live, work, and otherwise conduct our daily lives in are built on top of older human settlements. And sometimes these settlements are/were graveyards and even unmarked burial sites.

If there were hauntings, then every building we occupy could possibly be haunted, not just our homes.

I think it sometimes happens that family burial plots that were once part of a family farm get forgotten and overrun and decayed, not to be re-discovered until what was once a farm gets turned into building plots. I have read of cases where someone discovers an old map, and a homeowner learns that his house in fact sits where the old family plot once was – any remains and coffins having decayed to the point where nothing was noted during excavation, as can easily happen in acidic soil such as here in New England.

All of that said: no, don’t believe in haunting for such a reason.

Churches are build over the tombs of martyrs and saints. In the church were I went to mass before my last move, and the tombs of some of the parish priests were in the basement. Bishops, priests and laypeople are buried in and under churches. In fact the tombs of popes are under St. Peter’s Church in Rome. I never heard about the ghosts of any of these people haunting the churches.
I would think having your house upon a graveyard very unsavory. I would wonder who I was walking on in my yard and wouldn’t like workmen digging up the yard to fix waterlines or the like because of what they could easily dig up.
