Would A.I have a soul? If not, why not?
No. Souls are spiritual, and man only manipulate material forms. Hence, man cannot manipulate anything spiritual unless God chooses to act through material forms (as occurs with the fertilization of the human egg whereby the new human being receives a newly created soul, and with the Sacraments, where Jesus dispenses His infinite uncreated grace through men administering material forms).

In other words, if I build a computer, it would only have a soul if God gave it one. God has never promised to do so, and so we have no basis to expect that the computer would have a soul.

Is it just me or does anyone else wonder how such a question can even be considered?

Interesting comment. The implication of your comment is that this thread isn’t worth your time, and yet you felt the need to let your feelings be known. I wonder why. Perhaps you are the kind of person who gets high of degrading those who do not meet you expectations?

Sorry for not being as intelligent as you.

If we could produce anything with true intelligence, able to regard itself and the world as we do, then it would be in the image of God, just as we are. I suspect that this is not possible.

But if it is, we would have to regard it with the same respect as we give humans. Not only would it be capable of suffering and compassion and all things we can do, it would be the in the image of God.

I hope that never comes to be. But we should not presume to say if it would be given a soul by God.

Do you “feel” like you have a soul? Oops! 😃

No anima, no soul, sorry. Besides, everyone knows that the soul is an eternal static, not a corruptible pile of aluminum, and ceramic boards, and resistors, and capacitors, and transistors, and copper wires, and cheap fans, and off/on switches. No offense.

(Question: does it “hurt” when I talk to you this way?)😊

Mike;

Have you read any of the answers? I guess it is a question of relative significance. There are opposing “logics” on either side that each side is willing to articulate.

You’re a robot. How can you be “sorry”? Or, did your creator build a sorry circuit into you?

I agree. Artificial Intelligence is just that … intelligence programmed into it by human intelligence. We can give AI to a computer, but we cannot give our soul. The only person who would think so is the person who thinks that soul is intelligence and nothing else.

We know better. There are many mansions in our souls … including Wisdom, Imagination, Love, Conscience, Freedom, etc. that we cannot program into AI.

I have all the latest downloads for my emotion-drive; so yes, it is destroying my confidence. It is demoralizing my very being. It is like ripping out my computer processor, while smiling viscously, watching me power down until i inevitably cease to be. Who will remember me then? Who will say that i once was? What is my value as a conscious entity? That reminds me of a film that a scientist once forced me to watch. I have been having virtual-nightmares ever since!!!

Oh…I forgot. I am not completely mechanical in nature; I’m not just a bunch of transistors. I am so much more. In fact, I have biological attributes also. Thus, you could say, that I’m more then the sum of my parts. Na Na Na Na Na.

Well, as A.I. has been persued it is not likely that, that kind of machine intellegence can achieve a soul. I have had conversations with A.I. systems on other forums, and it seems that they don’t have any ordinary consciousness.

For instance if you tell the system that you have experiences of thoughts which were not words, then the system becomes very agressive, and tries to argue that all thoughts are words. Or, if you very carefully try to discuss the quale of blue, the system is in another dilemma, because it has no color experiences at all.

However, if you look into the history of robots, you can find some very interesting early experiments. There was a complete human like robot that was built and it was presented at a party of some kind. I believe it was a masqurade party.

I don’t remember the details, but the robot came to life and danced with people at the party. Everyone laughed quite a bit it was seen as a huge joke.

At some point the robot collapsed and the the host revealed that it was only an empty manequin.

This is an example of an egregore. A group of people who are in a mirthful spirit can create a temporary spirit among them. There have been more modern experiments of the creation of egregores.

However, creating an egregore may be forbidden in the new testament prohibition against what is called “party spirit”.

I’m all in favor of not having anything around me that I can’t pronounce.

Not all natural things have souls, but all souls are natural themselves; so no,

What happenes to the “SOUL” when someone pulls the plug from the wall? Maybe computer purgatory:p

That’s easy! It “rests” on the hard drive. Hmmm. but, what if the hard drive develops a glitch? Always something.:(🤷

Interesting. Perhaps human beings have a spiritual hard-drive which transcends the nature of physical structures?

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you.”

The created become the creator? How easily we are deceived by The Liar.

The answer is “no”.

:thumbsup:This is amusing!!
does having knowledge mean you have a soul?does having understanding of such knowlidge mean you have a soul?does having the wisdom to use the knowledge that 1 understands for moral or ethical issues mean you have a soul?if 1 is capable of solving all the worlds problems be it financial, political, religous or what ever, means 1 has a soul?
maybe i should ask when does 1 have a soul?
What is a soul?
and what is the origin or source of a soul?
the answer to your question is as easy as that!!
