Would an irreverent joke be considered a mortal sin?

Recently, I made an irreverent joke about a priest which was related to the scandals. Before I said it, I knew it was irreverent, but I blurted it out anyway. Right after, I felt really guilt about it. I’m not 100% sure but I feel like it qualifies as a mortal sin.

The best solution when you have said something that pings your conscience like this is not worry about mortal or venial, but simply apologize to God, don’t do it again, and confess it at your reasonable next opportunity.

Unless you suffer from scruples, in which case you should follow your confessor’'s guidance on confession.

You say in another thread you have OCD symptoms, so I am concerned this is scruples. Talk to your Priest.

Looking at the three topics you;ve created, I think you may be scrupulous. The internet is the wrong place to seek help/answers for this. You should speak to your pastor.

Thank you! I really want to talk to a priest about it, but I’ve got bad social anxiety which I’m working on, so I can finally talk about it to a priest.

Then maybe, if it is within your possibilities (oportunity, time and money), you can also see a psychologist (preferably catholic).

I also had some sort of social anxiety and, while I’ve accepted that I am an introvert, seeing a psychologist has helped me a lot with it and with discovering myself.

I suffered from social anxiety in the past. I remember times when I had no choice but to do things that I would feel sick and my knees would tremble. It’s worth getting help for it. Remember, when you speak to a priest (and preferably also a counselor), they are not there to judge there; but to help you.

I’ve been seeing a psychologist and she’s helped me tremendously in my social anxiety; however, although she’s a Catholic, she’s rather lax when it comes to sins, so not too helpful for discussing scruples. I’m looking forward to making more progress in my social anxiety in the next few weeks, so I can finally speak with a priest.

Glad to have someone relate. I’m inclined to say Confession anonymously because I’m really embarrassed about some sins, but I guess I would benefit from a face to face one, so I can get guidance. However, I still find it really embarrassing since one of my sins (the one from my first post on this forum) is sexual in nature, and I kind of find it really embarrassing to talk to a priest about it as a teenage girl.
