Would buying accessories of a bad TV show be sinful?

I didn’t realize that there was absolutely no privacy at those internet cafes. I hope you let your customers know they are being monitored so that they don’t do things like go into their bank accounts or other private matters, even email.
Stuff like that can’t be seen. Porn on the other hand is recognizable from my distance.
If my job involved seeing any amount of pornography, I would change jobs. I wouldn’t want any of those images in my head. Why don’t you just post a sign saying no porn, and if you’re caught, you’re out and never allowed back? Wouldn’t that be a lot easier? Or how about just blocking those sites? It can be done, you know. You don’t have to play “big brother.”

Something seems kind of weird here.
I tried that but my customers found a way around it. The only way they never figured out it was me closing their windows remotely is because of the complicated look of the server program I’m using. Besides, I can only afford free blocking programs and they’ll never be as effective as one that bites out of your wallet. -_-;;

Furthermore, I have to say that your suggestion to change jobs is nigh impossible and laughable (well-intended you might be). Not only is it the only thing that provides me with a decent internet connection but it’s also the only other thing my family earns income from. My parents own this place you see.

In short: No can do.

Besides, why do you think I shut down these windows secretly? If I berated my customers they would just stop coming. They don’t always watch porn (they play games half the time they’re here too) and that’s why I can’t just kick them out completely. I’ve got a bad reputation already as it is (at least that’s what my parents tell me). There’s no point in digging myself deeper into a hole. -_-;;

P.S.

It’s actually quite easy for me to erase pornography from my mind (at least the live-action variety). It comes with the fact that those things just make me wanna puke instead of turning me on.

Why do you want customers who watch porn on your computers? If for no other reason, there tend to be a lot of computer viruses with these sites, not even mentioning that it is completely immoral. If it were me, I would post a huge sign - no porn! - and would immediately throw someone out who violated it. Why can’t you do that? Your explanation makes no sense to me.

You can only afford “free” blocking programs? C’mon on! You don’t use any anti-virus programs that allow you to block sites? How do you function? My internet service allows me to block sites at no extra cost. You’ve got to come up with a better explanation.

There are a lot of things that make me sick, but for that very reason, such things will tend to stick in my mind. Ever see a really bad accident? That never goes away. Your “explanations” don’t hold any water.

Will you read my post again? I specifically mentioned that they don’t watch porn all the time. They just do it when my back is turned. And yes, I do have signs that say no pornography. The other internet cafes here do too. Are you so naive to think they’d pay attention to that? However, I can’t throw them out unless I want to stop having food on my table. My dad has an unfortunate habit of treating his customers like gods (not that he hasn’t come around to that but he still does it occasionally). He would kill me if I turned off any more people from this place.

I live in a THIRD WORLD COUNTRY!!! What do you expect!? Almost every piece of software and hardware in this joint is a low-class downloadable compared to what you oh so wonderfully privileged foreigners over there have. Please don’t act like the things you suggest are easy to obtain. It’s insulting.

As for not being able to turn it off from your mind? I’ve seen pictures of people’s remains in the aftermath of a terrorist bombing. Do those images haunt me? No. Are you trying to come off as queasy here?

I agree with you . Five years ago when living in France I got my first computer . My service provider was AOL . A neighbour
had helped me to hook up. Almost immediately a pop-up appeared on the screen. In my naivety I asked my friend "whats that about ? " He said someone wants to know if you want to see pictures of them !!! I was just about able to surf the internet and send a email . Later on there were more pop-ups which were pornographic.
Since I needed to use the internet and send emails all I could do was cancel the pop-ups whenever they appeared. But the images stay in the mind and would come back later. I changed my service provider as soon as possible.
To claim that one has to watch any kind of porn is truly Real spiritual poverty .:shamrock2::twocents:

Dear Lost Wanderer,

Whilst I appreciate and indeed sympathise with the difficult position that you find yourself
in, are you quite certain that there is no way to extricate yourself from it and find alternative employment elsewhere? Are there some friends who may be able to help or did you mention that you are a recluse somewhere, I can’t quite remember?

Being continually exposed to this type of morally offensive material is clearly a most unsatisfactory state of affairs for a Catholic and will, at least in time, leave an indelible impression on your mind for bad and seriously blunt your moral sensibilities. We must keep ourselves pure an avoid all that is sinful or what will compromise our faith. Moreover, if your customers are aware that you are a Christian, and I sincerely hope they are, then your tolerance of this debasing material in your cafe, signs notwithstanding, is clearly not not a good testimony - “keep youself pure” (I Tim. 5: 22).

However, I fully admit that it is easy for us in the affluent west to sit at our PC’s and give pious advice, clearly we are not in your shoes dear friend and I for one really do appreciate your predicament, especially with your father (I have horrendous relationship with my step-father, so I do know).

I will remember you in my prayers today. Blessings on you.

Warmest good wishes,

To the first question, the simple yet sad answer is no. Besides, I haven’t even graduated out of college yet (and even that’s not looking too bright). Helping with the family business is the only thing I can do that’s close to earning a living. It’s hard enough as it is for me to prove to my overcritical parents that I can do this job right. Furthermore, don’t even get me started on how running this place might actually become my only means to put food on the table.

To the second question, yes I am a bit of a recluse. The internet is the only easy place for me to find people who share my beliefs (and compared to the rest of people my age, calling me “eccentric” would be a grave understatement). Although I do have real friends, they’re actually waaaay more secular in their views. In fact, a good deal of them have actually watched the pornographic cartoons/comics I’ve mentioned. I actually come off as a bit of a prude to them!

Well frankly, I’m one of those who’d rather wrestle bloodily with the darkness than hide from it in a bubble. If anything, it doesn’t really blunt me but more like reinforces my view of how depraved this world is. There are even times when I actually delve a little deeper and study these materials. Suffice it to say, the fruits of my research are quite satisfactory in that it had proven my very theories regarding porn.

It is truly mind garbage. Pointless. Carnal. Unintelligent. It is the lowest class of entertainment.

It is nigh impossible to portray such an industry in a good light and I intend to portray it that way.
However, I fully admit that it is easy for us in the affluent west to sit at our PC’s and give pious advice, clearly we are not in your shoes dear friend and I for one really do appreciate your predicament, especially with your father (I have horrendous relationship with my step-father, so I do know).
Well thanks for your sympathies. With regards to staying pure though… I don’t know. I just feel like my whole life up till now was telling me that “purity” in your sense was not my destiny. For all I know, my circumstances right now could be proof of that. Though avoiding lust can always be an easy task, there are other things in my mind that you wouldn’t attribute to someone who is “pure”.

First of all, ever ran a net cafe? Who do you think I deal with everyday? It’s my job to keep an eye on my customers all the time. Both children and adults use the computers here and I have to make sure the adults aren’t watching anything junior should be seeing. Furthermore, I gotta do it with subtlety via the server (it lets me close programs of the other computers remotely). If people caught on that I shut down their net browsers if I caught them surfing for porn, it might turn them off.

Besides, if anything, I find that artistic condemnation of pornography can be a powerful argument. Not many people will accept the morality card because they’re already far too steeped in relativism. If you hit them with the artistic critic card however, and make them feel small with the fact that they enjoy such low-class entertainment, then it makes them think twice.

Finally, I’d just like to say that I actually get a sort of twisted, negative inspiration from porn. It fuels my desire to obliterate sexual fantasies by first creating what looks to be one only for me to flip it over and smash it to the ground. I intend to especially shock those who enjoy scenes of domination and rape. It’s like “Oh yeah, mwahaha he’s gonna do her.” but in the next moment, BAM! I throw something in that turns the tables and has the criminal dirtbag being the one begging for mercy. >:P
i think they have what you are describing on a show called, “To catch a predator”
have you seen it?

Nope but I just looked it up. Are you talking about the one on Dateline NBC?
If it is, it’s pretty interesting and yeah, that’s kind of what I’ve decided to go for. The only difference is that my scenes are fictional fantasy. 😛

More than just weird—utterly poisonous.

The world is rotting from a glut of sin, and people are demanding their right to porn.

The wages of sin is death. It is no coincidence that euthanasia and abortion are looked upon today as desirable norms.

God have mercy on our wilful disobedience.

There is no reason in the world to watch Seinfeld other than entertainment. We are told to redeem the time in Ephesians 5:16. How many hours have you spent watching garbage like Seinfeld? We only get so much time our in our lives, and we will have to account for it all when we stand before our Lord.

**And there are better things to do with your time than watch TV. **
I have seen and dealt with ‘progressives’ in the Church who pretty viciously go after ‘traditionalists’ with a favorite refrain that they don’t care about the poor and don’t *do *anything. (First of all, even if we were not active in ministries, avoiding sin and reverently worshiping God is **doing **something. Something pretty important. But almost always non-progressives are very generous but perhaps not as showy and loud about it).

Yet, they seem to be most in favor of more than wasting time with pop culture (a priest, God bless him, gave a homily on the wonders of Larry King and Depack Chopra. It was a very long morning that Wednesday. Nice man…definitely progressive.)

You can watch Larry King and justify it by saying it is informative (and we may differ on that). Seinfeld does not pretend to be a news show. It is a sitcom that celebrates trechery, lying, sex outside of marriage, and general selfishness while wrapping itself up in ‘silliness.’

Christ said that we will be judged how we judge others. So, maybe we should all be careful about admonishing ‘mean old conservatives’ while we enjoy a steady diet of something the Church absolutely would have condemned formally sixty years ago.

The Church’s movie rating board is more lenient than I had expected- Inglorious Bastards, which has more amoral charaters than one would care to count, includes a very brief sexual encounter, several brutal shooting deaths and even a ‘gnatzi’ being beaten to death quite graphically, was not placed on the ‘morally offensive’ list- albiet it didn’t exactly recieve a “g” rating.
I couldn’t find where ‘old’ tv shows such as Sienfeld would be rated however.
(Side note- the movie was quite good)

Dear King Theoden,

Thankyou for your posting which I found most uplifting,

It appears to me that many Christians, both Catholic and Protestant, living in the affluent and hedonistic west are quite content with an inferior, hand in hand with the world standard of sanctity that was hitherto unknown. Notwithstandanding the fact that Sacred Scripture, to say nothing of the lives of the saints, enjoins a separation from the world. Thus St. Paul warns the Corinthians not to become again ensnared with the idolatry of Corinth when he says, “Therefore come out from among them, and be separate says the Lord, and touch nothing unclean” (2 Cor. 6: 17, emphasis mine). Now the application of this text to our situation today is surely not too far to seek. In short we Christians should be spiritually and morally withdrawn from the neo-pagan society in which we live. It clearly follows from this that there are certain practices and habits, certain places that a Christian simply cannot go, and, one may add, wouldn’t want to go.

In the light of this it is beyond belief that there are so many Catholics who will vehemently defend to the death demoralizing ammusements (e.g. bawdy TV shows and films, promiscuous dancing, salacious fiction and rock music with its occultic connections and sexual innuendo). They will engage in all manner of sophistry and fine nuancing in order to justify and normalize these sinful pursuits. In their heart of hearts they must surely know that these things are wrong and morally unwholesome. What is most revealing is that these people seldon cite Scripture to support their erroneous and fallacious arguments; it all comes down to their carnal reasoning in the final analysis. Their usual line of argument, as you are probably aware, is to insinuate that we are imposing our own personal standard of morality for ourselves upon others who are suppossedly as equally devout. They then proceed to personally attack us with accusations of being condescending and with being obessed with removing the splinters from the eyes of our brethren. By this they seek to demonise us and totally discredit us in the eyes of others; in actual fact they are only demonstrating just how uncharitable and deeply insecure they themselves are with the absurd uncatholic positions that they are seeking to uphold.

As a recent convert to the Church from Anglicanism, I have been deeply sadened by the number of Catholics, even on CAF, who are recklessly determined to defend that which is indefensible and morally reprehensible. Such shameless worldliness almost makes me want to sit down and weep as I thought I had left all this behind me in socially liberal Protestantism. Do not such people realize that their pre-occupation with the tawdry and trivial is degarading their own humanity and causing our holy faith to be evil spoken of? Look the Church’s mandate is to convert the world, not to be converted by the world - “the church which marries the spirit of the age will be a widow in the next” (Dean Inge).

Only habits of self-restraint and self-denial can lay the foundation of a virile godly character and foster a faith that will not buckle under pressure. - "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? it is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden under the foot of men (St. Matt. 5: 13). These words of our Lord implicitly call for a renunciation of worldliness and an ardent pursuit of holiness. Moreover St. Paul says that the wise man will make “…the most of the time, because the days are evil” (Eph. 5: 15). This does not exactly allow for or give much encouragement to worldly indulgences and pleasure seeking does it? If the exponents of a this worldly type of Catholicism denounce this as smacking of priggish Puritanism then so be it, but it is, nonetheless, validated by Sacred Scripture.

Warmest good wishes,

I hadn’t intended to post on this thread again, however I did just yesterday catch a repeat of the final ever episode of Seinfeld, which I haven’t seen since it first aired.

Anyone remember what happens in the final episode of Seinfeld? They end up on trial and are in fact put IN JAIL for a year - for not helping someone who was getting robbed. All their bad behaviour throughout the series is brought up and horrifies the judge and jury who are trying them.

I fail to see how that can under any circumstances be said to glorify the behaviour that has occurred through the series - quite the opposite.

As for the premise that the show is about nothing - no, that’s the premise the characters IN the show give for the show THEY are writing within the show.

Clearly a show that is, or is premised, on being about nothing is neither watchable nor watched, and accordingly the show-within-the-show is a flop. It’s not meant to be a statement, serious or otherwise, about the actual show Seinfeld.

I repeat, since many seem not to get the point, that people can watch the same show and be affected by it in different ways. Yes there is immorality in Seinfeld - I’m not denying that.

I absolutely wouldn’t watch it if it was merely humorous - I don’t watch most sitcoms, and certainly not in repeat. Is Seinfeld funny? Of course. Is that what first attracted me to teh show? Yes - but a) I was a teenager if memory serves, b) I hadn’t reverted to the Church and c) many a man will tell you that he was first attracted to his wife by her physical beauty and only later discovered other attractive qualities in her, so it’s not wrong or impossible that our reasons for being attracted to things change over time.

I can tell you I do take seriously what I watch and listen to - but more than that, the way I watch and listen to things has changed dramatically since my reversion, and as I get older in general. I’m not asserting that I could watch or listen to anything and not be affected by any of it, just that in some cases there has been a change, Seinfeld being one.

I’m truly sorry that other peoples’ faith hasn’t changed the way they watch and listen to things as it has for me, but that’s no reason to assume that I’m either being insincere or fooling myself in my assertions that it has affected me in this way.

I have no reason to lie about it to myself or to you - I’m not such an addict that I’d miss Seinfeld if it were never shown again, or watch it every day, or own videos and tshirts of the show, or anything like that, and I’m well aware that many of you won’t believe what I’m saying anyway.
