...would God become one with sinful flesh (Mary) -- for 9 months?

Jesus is the One, yes… and because He was born in the flesh He is the offspring of Eve. I don’t see how Mary comes into this unless you force her into it.

I guess that is the crux of the matter. I do not believe that Mary was immaculate or that she was sinless. That is why calling her the new Eve is nonsensical to me.
Catholics don’t believe we are ‘forcing’ Mary into this - we think we are simply following the logic that has been laid out in Sacred Scripture. And I understand if you don’t believe Mary to be immaculately conceived or sinless, but hopefully you see the Catholic argument for referring to her as such, just as she is given several titles for her extraordinary role as the ‘handmaid of the Lord’ and the mother of Our Redeemer, Jesus Christ.

Aren’t we all called to be “handmaid of the Lord”? You know what she called herself in that passage, right? The translation handmaid doesn’t really show it, but she called herself a female slave of God.

I’m not really sure what this is supposed to add to the argument. It appears to mean that Mary is no more important than anyone else for following God’s will. Yes, we are all called to serve the Lord, but only one person has ever been asked to carry God in the womb through birth, then raise God as His Mother. That is one of the reasons Mary is honored, and why the many prayers dedicated to Mary ask for her intercession - because of that special role, as she demonstrated at Cana.

=joe370;7150783]Hey Jon…
Agreed.
Thanks, Joe.
Agreed. However, it is a non-salvific article of faith. The question is:
What gives the CC the right to make this claim? Does the CC possess the biblical/metaphorical keys to bind and loose? The CC absolutely does not if the CC is not the historical church founded by Jesus, forever guided by the HS, into all truth. Once I was able to answer this question, all of my other doubts/questions were answered. 👍
I understand. And coming from my perspective, which you know quite well, I wouyld be willing to accept either the EOC or CC position were they to merge. Currently, I lean toward the IC position, but am unwilling to reject or condemn other positions, including OC, without that unity of belief, east and west.
As I mentioned before: the leaders in Jesus’ church, were given the authority to bind and loose as per the bible. The question I had to ask myself was: Which church leaders, since Pentecost, (in the world today) - were given the authority to bind and loose? Again, like you said, binding via the individual interpretation of the bible is frowned upon according to the bible.
And for me, that is an unanswered question.
It was either the EOC or the CC for the simple fact that I could not establish who founded either church, other than Jesus, which was not the case with every Protestant church. I am fairly sure that you agree with that simple logic, but I could be wrong.
If one takes the view, as I do, the this Reformation Church I belong to is, in fact, a part of the western Church, albeit dealing with a temporary separation, then I am in fact in the Church Christ established.

Jon

=Reuben J;7150886]Thanks Jon, that’s all that I wanted to know. As always, it always encourages me to know how close your position with the Catholic Church is.
I’d certainly not want to change your mind on what you’d consider sufficient in the scripture for it to ‘bind the conscience of the believers’.
I note that you take seriously the angel’s greeting of ‘full of grace’ on Mary though not sufficient for a doctrine on the Immaculate Conception to be based on.
Just a couple of thoughts, Reuben.
1st, thanks for your kind words.
2nd, as I just told Joe, were there a unity of belief on the doctrine, east and west, like there is on the Theotokos, etc, I would be more inclinded to see doctrine here. As it is, I can’t say for sure which position is correct, as scripture can reasonably be used to support both.
Just a thought. Very often we cannot find Christian doctrines having explicit scriptural verses on which they can be categorically based on. I hope you agree with me on that. Where scriptural verses are used they have to be expounded in other that they support the doctrines.
Frankly I had trouble defending Christian doctrines solely based on the scripture. That’s why argument with non-Christians can never ends with a conclusion. Ultimately it is a matter of our faith in believing the said doctrines.
An example: There are no explicit scriptural verses on the resurrection (let alone the Trinity). Nobody saw Jesus actually rose from the dead. Though to us it is as obvious as anything; it is not so for the non-believers. They will ask you, ‘tell me where it says Jesus rise from his death?’ With the illusion that people can perform, even his death can be an illusion, a trick.
I understand your position, though perhaps not your example. Matt.28:6 is pretty clear.
*He is not here, for he is risen, as he said. Come, and see the place where the Lord was laid. *
So, I would say denying His resurrection, which is explicit in scripture, is to deny scripture itself. All that said, the Lutheran reformers did rely greatly on the early councils and ECF’s, which we very much need to understand scripture.
If Gabriel the archangel who brought the message of God replaced the name Mary with ‘Full of grace’, would that not saying anything about what she is in the eyes of God? Would God not sustain that, in view of the fact that it is God who asks? God sustained even for less (example Gideon) what more to say about his own plan of salvation that involves his Son?
In my personal opinion, even if I am not a Catholic, to deny the Immaculate Conception, is to deny God sustaining power in keeping to his word – full of grace.
So, let me ask you, do apply this to the Orthodox view, at least as it is explained here:
web.archive.org/web/20070728015648/http://www.philthompson.net/pages/faq/12.html

Does this seem a reasonable understanding of accepting “full of grace”. I do, and hence, my reluctance to agree with your statement, even though I’m, again, more inclined to agree with the IC, based on my (western) understanding of Original Sin.
God bless.
Reuben
His peace, my friend,
Jon

…That’s a real stretch
Yes, per the Bible, Eve was the physical mother of all mankind
However, your Mary/Christian analogy is a spiritual one, not physical.

Scripture does not show Mary as the teacher of Christianity to Jesus, so she cannot be the spiritual mother of Christianity.

Todd, you lost me dude. Nobody said anything about Mary being a “teacher of Christianity to Jesus.” The bible reveals to us that Jesus was our spiritual brother. Mary was Jesus’ physical and spiritual mother, therefore Mary is our spiritual mother as well, right, wrong, maybe?

I use to be right where you are now, so I definitely understand Jon. 👍

I believe that all baptized Christians, regardless of denomination, belong to the same church of believers. However, I also believe that all of the PC’s were founded by men as opposed to God, on Pentecost. I cannot say the same about the CC or the EOC, and trust me, I tried as a former non-Catholic…

It’s as if, sexual sin is the only sin that is actually a sin. Most of you forgot that Mary was an Israelite and it’s part of their tradition to remain a virgin till u get married. There’s no proof that Mary was sinless because bible made it clear that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God and it didn’t say all except Mary. Christ being what he is, humbled himself, took the form of flesh and bore our son that we may become saved. He was that we may become rich, he took our aflictions. He made himself lower than the angels. If Mary was without sin, the whole thing would’ve been defeated or null and void. Christ had no place to lay his head, he became nothing but we may become something. For him to be born by a human, that means he became low, that’s humility. Mary was not born without sin, she inherited sin and she fits the prophecy that’s why God chosed her. God should have chosed a Pharisee or a person from a priesthood family but he didn’t come for the righteous but for the lost sheeps. This idea of immaculate conception of Mary is empty and ubbiblical. Why do we chose to correct the word of God instead of follow it? I’ve seen a 16 year old girl who God uses to speak to his people nit because she’s string and spiritual but because God choses who he likes. Our common sense and reasoning is empty in God’s presence. We should stop using logic to approach the things of God. Example, if this, then that. No, God choses who he wants.

Lets take a look at this Scripture Verse. Being the Immaculate Conception of the VIrgin Mary …Concieved without Sin.

CONCIEVED WITHOUT SIN…

Theres seem to be doubt about Scripture in the BIble which can coincide with such a theory. This isn’t ‘MY’ doubt but some other, Yet we do know its common in this period for your woman, “Virgins” if you will, concentrating themselves to God. to remain free of sim. So here we have it!

CORINTHIANS 7:28 …"and if you thou Marry thou has not sinned; an if a Virgin Marry, she has not Sinned!

Thus we have a dirrect correlation of VIRGIN/ NO-SIN from the BIBLE. Now since this a bit more prevelant in this period that in the past. I would assume it was faily common.

Aside for this, God knowing ALL shurely whould have know if The Blessed Mother Mary has sinned which BTW she didn’t Clear stated eveidence for you here!

THus we are back to required not fitting for Blessed Mother beining SINNLESS

Eve.
And I will put enmity between you (Satan) and the woman (Eve) and between **your offspring (Jesus) **and hers; he will crush your head and you will strike his heel.
Satan could only strike Jesus’ heel and cause Him to suffer. Jesus on the other hand crushes his head.
Huh?

The antecedent for “you” is Satan; thus, the antecedent for “your” should be Satan, too, right? So how in the world could Jesus be Satan’s offspring?

Uh… of course, you are right:

Eve.

Interesting. I’ve not heard Jesus referred to as an offspring of Eve, although I suppose in one sense it is true.

However, when you think of Jesus being **the offspring of someone, **who is the person who comes to mind? Eve? Or Mary? :hmmm:

It seems more reasoned to assume that when Genesis is discussing “your offspring”, the “your” refers to Mary, as “offspring” refers to Jesus. Don’t you agree, Janet?

Actually no.
Genesis does talk about what will happen in the future, but in its context it’s obvious to me, that Eve is the one whose offspring is meant. Mary is part of her offspring and Jesus is through His mother. Technically we are all of the offspring of Eve, but this prophecy was clearly directed at Jesus Christ, when seen in light of the rest of Scripture.

Christ in you, the hope of glory. Heaven rejoices for your witnessing.

I don’t disagree with anything you’ve said here.

But, like most Catholic answers, it’s not either/or but both/and. The prophecy is not* only directed at Jesus Christ. The woman is not only* Eve. Enmity is not only between the woman.
