Would God punish me for not playing guitar?

God gave me the gift of being able to play music. The problem is when I play for awhile I get tempted to listen to what I consider evil music like Charles Manson and some bands that are into the occult. So then I put the guitar away and the temptation goes away. I’m torn between the guitar, sin, and the Almighty God. But I feel like God punishes me for not playing guitar. I just don’t want to play it.

Make a resolution that you will only listen to and play music that can be used in church,

Or that can be used for Holy entertainment 🙂

God.gave you music to use it for good!
I know of musicians that turned all their music skills to use only for church music and people who never go to mass will go to hear.them play at the Christmas mass.

Offer your music to God!

If God gave you a pencil, don’t throw it away, use it for God 🙂

Maryhelp I really try to just do that but after about a week the evil one says why don’t you play this chord progression or listen to some black metal so I become enticed. It’s really difficult not to. If I never listened to satanic music before I was a Christian I wouldn’t be into all these evil bands.
 
No he wouldn’t, but is it officially a sin to listen to certain songs? And can’t you find alternatives like Metallica or Demon Hunter?
 
The guitar doesn’t make you do anything.
That’s an excuse, pure and simple.
I’m a professional musician and I play what I want, when I want.
You should do the same.
If certain kinds of music are bad for you then be mature about it and stay away from them.
There’s plenty of good you can do with your God-given gift.
Stop making excuses for your own bad choices. Inanimate objects don’t control us.

See your confessor about these intrusive thoughts and pray the St. Michael prayer frequently.
 
I’ve tried listening to unblack metal but in my opinion the music is just as menacing as regular black metal. They say the lyrics are what matter but music itself can be evil with the devils tritone and what not.
 
There are so many genres of music.
You can write your own.
You can start up your own band.
Get control of your faculties, and make good music.

Musically speaking, that Charles Manson album (and there were a few) wasn’t that bad. Seriously not that bad. Are you referring to “Manson Family Jams”? If folk - which the Manson stuff is, more than rock – is your cup of tea, maybe start with Fairport Convention or Joan Baez or early Bob Dylan.
 
Go through these steps:
  1. decide to fast from listening to or playing music (unless you are asked to play good music), for a few months
  2. go back listening and playing music but only music that is Holy for church (for a few months),
  3. go back listening and playing any music that is good, not sinful, for a few months
I know of someone who like you, used to play modern music that he questioned whether it was really catholic

Through the above steps he turned his focus on only playing good music, and mainly focuses now on playing music in church.
 
While church music is CERTAINLY worthy, any music that does not lead to an occasion of sin is better.
Just resolve not to go there.
A fine musician can play and appreciate many genres.

I’ll be frank. Feeling like God will punish you for not being a guitarist, or feeling tempted to listen to Charles Manson or to fear certain chord progressions, sounds a little bit too much like you’re trying to be silly here. Have II-V-I’s suddenly become scary or something? 🙂 (Well … let’s not get into that.)

But let’s say you’re not being silly.

Yes, there can be a real temptation to appreciate certain forms of music that can be a near occasion of sin. No, not everyone has the same occasions of sin.

Not everyone would listen to, say, Cradle of Filth and have temptations to grow sentimental about the occult. Others, with certain backgrounds, might. Not everyone would listen to trance and suddenly have memories of using drugs or womanizing. Others will. Obviously, avoiding such temptations is prudent, and not doing so is sinful.

Now, can music be evil even beyond mere lyrics? Yes, it can. As someone once said, music is a lot more than just pretty noises. It can be used on purpose to evoke certain emotions, and it can be used like a tool to indulge in certain passions. And IMO, anyone who doesn’t understand that music can lead us into certain spiritual states just hasn’t been reflecting particularly well.

So yes … if you have temptations, leave it alone.

And even if you don’t, put down that guitar, and pick up a **real **instrument. 😛

They compose modern music about Jesus that is awesome,

(don’t give up guitar! Its a powerful instrument! Especially for church music, Chris Tomlin plays most of his christian songs on guitar and is stunning)
