Tell us all, do you believe HACKING into someone’s computer without their permission or without the permission of a legal authority through a warrant is legal??
A simple yes or no would suffice.

Does Best Buy destroy the hard drives afterwards? I need a place to take my old computer but don’t want the info on the hard drive to be accessible to thieves and hackers.
 
I wouldn’t count on it. I opened my dead computer and removed the drive, hammered it a few times, then threw in the trash. You could also reformat the hard drive before giving the whole machine to the store.
 
A good hammering is likely more secure than a reformat.

Also breaking the media in the process.

Could law enforcement do it licitly, if they did not have a specific warrant, though? What does your conscience say?
 
I did answer the question, you seem to be confused. I provided some examples of use of networks that were illegal and some that was not.
