Can you imagine the Blessed Virgin Mary wearing a bikini or even a one-piece swim suit?

Why do so many women / young girls not see how immodest a swimsuit is? It wasn’t even 50 years ago that men and women were not allowed to swim together. At a country club I work at, there is an old pool that is now out of use. I asked what it was for and I was told that it was the old women’s swimming pool. You see, when the club was built in the 1930s, women and men would not swim together because swimming requires immodest dress.

Any thoughts?

I agree with the sentiment entirely! 🙂 Swimwear, especially for women, is extremely immodest. It probably would’ve been considered pornographic 100 years ago.

You are causing everyone to sin here. Doncha know? Now we all have an image of the Blessed Mother in a swim suit in our heads:eek:

I personally think that were the Blessed Virgin Mary living on earth in our times and in our culture, she would follow the prevailing Catholic standards of modesty. Yes, I think that would leave out a string bikini; but I don’t think it means that she would dive into the deep end dressed as she was in, say, the Guadalupe or Lourdes apparitions. Again, this is my personal opinion, but I think she would dress modestly by dressing appropriately to the activity in which she was going to engage. Many of the one-piece swimsuits are really quite modest, all things considered.

Modesty does not mean that every square inch of skin must be covered (if it did, then indigenous women in primitive parts of the world would be “immodest” by our standards). When applied to dress, modesty means that one dresses appropriately to the elements and prevailing activity, and without drawing undue attention to oneself.

Maybe something more like this http://www.fashion-era.com/images/Victorians/swimearlyvics400new.jpg

rather than the modern day sports illustrated variety…
HEY!!! No posting pictures of hot babes like this! Now I gotta go to confession…:tsktsk:

Where on earth did you get the information that men and women had to swim separately 50 years ago? I’m almost old enough to collect Social Security. Even when I was a small child, men and women swam together. The bathing suits were more modest than those they have now, but they were not a whole lot different, except that they didn’t wear the really tiny bikinis that girls wear today. Women did wear two-piece bathing suits, however.

If you want to be shocked, go to Europe and see the women sunbathing without their tops on!

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. Once you seen one pair of bazooms on the beach, you’ve seen them all.

Our Lady at Fatima said fashions would be introduced that would greatly offend her Son.

So, just out of curiosity, would you consider men’s Speedo’s to be immodest as well?

Are you also suggesting that women go back to ankle length dresses and long sleeves all year round? Do you suggest that women use wet suits to swim in? I mean, what would you suggest we wear instead? They don’t MAKE swimsuits much more modest than the one I wear. I would have to make my own (and with my skill watch it fall apart the first time I’m in a pool). And going back to wetsuits, those things show the exact shape of your body. Not very modest. I think that Mary would go out in a swimming suit, just not a tiny one.

Somehow now I’m imagining a whole new fashion line called “WWJW?”

“What Would Jesus Wear?”

Don’t laugh. There are several online companies that specialize in modest women’s clothing, including swim suts that are not too much different than the bathing beauties above.

My kids swim on a neighborhood swim team. At one of their meets, one of the competitive swimmers wore a shirt and shorts over her team speedo. From the looks of it, her family was Muslim. On some of the Catholic sites people recommend wearing shorts over a swim suit, especially for teen girls. Some people take modesty very seriously.

But you can get pretty modest suits “off the rack” too.

Here’s a great link to an article on modesty:

kensmen.com/catholic/modesty.html

If you scroll down to the bottom, you’ll find a bunch of links to modest clothing sites.

I remember seeing one suit in a homeschool catalog that was like a short-sleeved unitard (bike-shorts length) and had a skirt sewn over it, They had them in girls and women’s sizes. I wish I could remember who made these :o They were very cute - bright floral patterns like modern swimsuits, but much more modest. [Just an interesting side note: I tried a Google search for the suits and turned up a lot of sites for Mormans and Muslims - go figure!]

I know of some ladies who did a modified version of this on their own, just using exercise clothing. I also noticed that may of the Olympic swimmers last were wearing unitards or bike-shorts length swimwear. Great improvement, esp. for the guys’ teams 😉

News #1: In the ancient Israel, baths were public and coed. So were those in the Roman empire except maybe during the death of the republic and the beginning of the principate.

News #2: It’s women who wear things, but it’s guys who see and it’s their choice what to imagine in their minds. It’s an awful shift of the burden to make women responsible for men fantasising about them.

News #3: Men’s parts (including the chest) work on women exactly the same way women’s parts work on men. And yet it’s supposed to be women’s responsibility and guys are not believed immodest for walking around in boxers or briefs on the beach. Women have more of a reason to stare at a men’s briefs than men at womens’ panties.

If you think swimsuit is immodest for a girl, go to the beach in pajamas. Or should you be allowed to go there in boxers or briefs and she left on her own to control herself and dressed in an all-covering robe so that you wouldn’t have to put any effort in keeping your thoughts pure?

It is for guys’ sinful minds and refusal to try to control themselves that girls can’t have as much comfort on the beach as is accorded to guys and it’s a good idea to remember this.

hmm im sorry you feel that way. its exactly that kind of thinking that got us the fashions of britney spears. it’s 50/50. men should control their eyes, most definitely. they should never look at a women with lust, as Jesus never did. however, women should also do their part to help keep men from looking. and yes, whoever asked, men’s speedo’s are immodest. i know this is a very touchy subject and people dont like to hear the truth, but modern swimwear, even one-pieces, is immodest.

Here are some quotes from Our Church on modesty:

"To say that '…modesty is a matter of custom’ is just as wrong as to say that, ‘…honesty is a matter of custom.’
  • Pope Pius XII
“Let parents keep their daughters away from public gymnastic games and contests; but if their daughters are compelled to attend such exhibitions, let them see that they are fully and modestly dressed. Let them never permit their daughters to don immodest garb.”
-Donato Cardinal Sbaretti, Prefect
Congregation of the Council
Rome, January 12, 1930

Imprimatur dated Sept. 24, 1956

“A dress cannot be called decent which is cut deeper than two fingers breadth under the pit of the throat; which does not cover the arms at least to the elbows; and scarcely reaches a bit beyond the knees. Furthermore, dresses of transparent materials are improper.”

-The Cardinal Vicar of Pius XII

hope those quotes clear up any confusion 🙂

UKCatholicGuy, I agree completely. I haven’t gone swimming in public for quite a while, because of the difficulty of finding modest clothes. Even the one-pieces with a skirt are pretty revealing.

I’d like to get something like this for myself (and my daughter, when she’s old enough) : wholesomewear.com/

Recently, a (male) poster on this forum made fun of the above site. To me, though, it’s just basic modesty…and it’s very liberating. There must be a lot of other women who feel this way; otherwise, the manufacturer wouldn’t be sold out!

It’s funny how men are so often the ones defending women’s “right” to wear skimpy clothing.
