Would I go to hell if I die as an atheist?

If you die without acknowledging God, you cannot be saved. That’s because without faith it is impossible to please God and in order to have faith, one must first acknowledge that God exists and is a rewarder of those who seek him. Since God can be known from the things that have been made, there is no exuse for not acknowledging Him (especially since He also gives the helps necessary to come to faith).

But just because you are an atheist now, does not mean you are therefore definitively condemned. You too have been redeemed and therefore salvation is possible for you. God gives His helps and graces at different times and if your ignorance is not a result of hard heartedness and sin, we acknowledge that He, in ways known to Himself, can lead those inculpably ignorant of the Gospel to find that faith without which it is impossible to please Him–even if at the last moments of life.

It depends. 😉
On what?

Why don’t we just die?

Well said:thumbsup:

Peace

If you’re so sure about atheism, why are you asking?
To know different opinions, perhaps like statistics.

I’m not sure about atheism, I think I’m sure about the non existence of a personal-religious God, but debating this would be out of the OP.

It’s ultimately God’s final decision whether or not to be merciful, but it doesn’t look very good. See scripture:

"He who believes and is baptized will be saved. ** He who does not believe will be condemned.**. (Mark 16:16)

By refusing to believe in God, and the Church, and the sacraments, one is excommunicating oneself from the only means of salvation.

By rejecting Christ’s chosen representatives on earth, we reject Christ, himself. When we reject Christ, we reject the one who sent him.

My friend, I don’t think anyone on this earth knows how many go where. You probably won’t ever find a scientific answer. 🤷
I’m not sure about atheism,
The honesty here is appreciated! 👍

Know that Jesus is waiting for you to come home. 🙂

A lot. 😉

Seriously, though, there’s a reason Christians quote the Scripture that says we are to approach our salvation “in fear and trembling” (Phillipians 2:12). We can’t say for sure that we know. It is not our place to judge a person’s destination after death, it is God’s place. Through his Church we have a sense of some of the “criteria,” but at the same time we can’t know what’s in another person’s heart at the time of his or her death.

So a lot of it would depend on what led you to profess atheism, even after you were baptized in the Catholic Church. Do you have diminished culpability because of your upbringing? Did you reject Christ because you have an uninformed/malformed idea of Him? Did you ever deliberately reject Christ, or was it more of a kind of natural atheism that you fell into, because you never really bothered to think about it? Do you seek to “convert” Christians to your way of thinking, or do you let it be? Do you embrace a sinful lifestyle? Do you do so obstinately or because you truly believe it is good (or at least, not bad?) What kind of philosophy do you live by? How do you determine your moral code?

I’m not suggesting that you go ahead and answer these on the thread, but these are just some of the things that pop to mind that could have an effect on the answer, from a Catholic point of view 🤷

Catholics say there is no salvation outside the Church…but that can be misunderstood. A person could be saved without being Christian…but such graces that saved that person would still come from God and His Church. But we have no way of knowing if that has ever happened, or would happen in the future. Also, simply professing to be Christian is not enough to guarantee salvation. The Church does not say “So and so is in Hell.” We have selected a very few individuals and declared that they are in Heaven (canonized Saints.)

I am not sure if this is helpful to you, but it’s what I was thinking about as I mused on your question.

IF you do not want God now, what makes you think you will want to be with Him later ???

Mortal sin is the complete rejection of God, isn’t that what atheism is all about ??

So, by the Church’s teaching, IF you die in the state of mortal sin, unrepentant, then you will go you know where. Why take chances, get right with God, and get back in with the Church and God’s good graces.

Scripture tells us the JUST man will barely be saved, to enter through the narrow door, to persist to the end, believe. If the saints are any indication, they tell us it’s very hard to get into heaven, even for those who DO believe! Christ said not everyone who said “Lord, Lord” would get into heaven.

You took half of what I said, I continued by saying I’m sure about the non existence of a personal- religious God, which includes Jesus.

God knows you. He loves you.

He is waiting for you to come to Him.

He is Longing for you to come to Him, so he can wrap you in his arms and tell you how much he loves you.

Will you listen to him ? He hopes so, but that is up to you.

Can I still go to Heaven if I don’t love him back? ( If he happens to actually exist).

Hell would be a terrible place to spend your eternal life in, but heaven is a happy place.
Love is an honestt feeling that we can’t fake , if I couldn’t love him back, why we should then suffer in hell? Why we don’t just cease to exist.😉 God is after all the most powerful, couldn’t he make this wish real?

Maybe you can. Are you genuinely searching for the truth, or looking for excuses to avoid doing that? Are you genuinely open to accepting God’s love if you come to accept that He may, in fact, exist?

We can’t answer these questions for you. The answers are only known to you and God. 🤷
