My husband and I divorced ten years ago. He subsequently married a Catholic woman who had been married two times previously, the first time in the Church. Neither our marriage nor either of her previous marriages had been annulled.
They are now separated and have been for two years. If my husband and I reunited, what would we have to do to have a valid marriage? I know we would need another civil marriage, but since we did not seek an annulment, what would we need to do? Without going into detail, I believe that there was a defect in our marriage in that I did not properly consent to our marriage. Does that even matter, since all marriages in the Church are presumed to be valid? If we do reunite, and I hope we do, I want everything to be right and I want to be sure that we have all the grace of the Sacrament of Matrimony, so I don’t want to rely on our first vows.
Also, would he need to have his second marriage annulled even though it obviously is not valid?
