Would I qualify to be catholic?

Whilst I accept the teachings of the catholic church, and I love its interpretation of christian scripture.

I have a problem with the past of the church.

I dont understand how the church taught one thing, and then condoned violence and hatred in its name.

In fact the behaviour of the catholic church is so repugnant to me, that I would find it extremely difficult to associate myself with an organisation with such a rabid past.

Yet I am drawn to its teachings.

Well, that’s a problem you would have to solve for yourself if you joined any of the manstream protestant traditions as well. Lots of bad actors there, too, including war, witch hunts, beheading heretics and burning people at the stake.

Ultimately, the only thing you can be drawn to is the Person of Jesus Christ, The teachings of the Church all center on the Person of Jesus Christ. Find Him, and you’re home!
 
Here is some unsolicited advice.

Pray.

If you are seeking the truth, then ask God to guide you to it. Don’t pick and choose, don’t believe in some parts and disbelieve in others, just pray and ask God to guide you.

I cant help it, no one faith seems to answer any of my questions, I still have reservations about the man-god thing, except your discussion with me on that helped me to accept that one as plausible.

I guess catholicism does answer many of my questions, but I hate the organisation itself.

How much of the “organization” have you come in contact with? I’m really nice. 😛

Yet is rejecting jesus the same as rejecting the RCC, with its past?

One man’s saint is another man’s demon.

Francis Xavier a saint, destroyed legitimate “orthodox traditions” in India, using military force.

Hardly a saint in my mind.

Personally - I have had no dealings with the RCC.
However its what I have read about at university and on wikipedia

God uses humans to achieve His goals…there are humans who make mistakes and sins , and there are saints ,we pray for the sinners and we praise the lives of our saints…the gates of hell will not prevail exactly because the church will be challenged but will not succomb…sometimes by outside forces/wars/heresies, sometimes inside…and he who endures will make it, as Jesus says, because we trust in Him for He turns the bad into good but nowhere did He say evil will stay away…on the contrary, satan will do his best by any means…

Do you enjoy being in America … do you call yourself an American? America has a very violent past, even to the point that we faught ourselves.

Seriusly though, to answer your question, I dont hold america or any nation to the same moral standard as the RCC, neither should you.

Ahh … but you’ve hit the nail on the head.
The teaching are ‘truth’ regardless of how badly some have acted in the past.
You *should * join or reject a church based on the teachings.

Do not confuse the actions of those bad people as actions condoned by the teachings of the church. They were not.

It might help you to dive a little more deeply into those historical points and find out what the church’s stance actually was.
I say this because many bad things are attributed to the church, when those ‘things’ were actually done/directed by some that were not *with *the church (kings, groups, individuals)… such as atrocities of the inquisition.

It is “staged” the Mass is a “rite” – that means it follows a specific pattern that may vary only within closely prescribed limits. We would prefer the term “ordered”. “Staged” makes it sound like some kind of show or trick.

I realise that it is meant to be a passover meal.

Shouldnt it be more “meal” and less “rite”
 
Can a person go to RCIA, even if you are not sure you want to be catholic?

Keep studying! I had problems with the Church’s history in the past. Reading about Bad Pope Alexander VI provoked a very brief crisis of faith. I can’t think of a single religion that has been immune from intolerance, cruelty and hypocrisy. We are all stained by " original sin".

rejecting the teaching is one thing, rejecting some parts of the past is another.There is the eastern Catholic Church as well…did you check the “past”?🙂
there is nothing called “past”,…there are parts of history that you might not like…do you like the part were catholics were being fed to lions? that’s another past of the same church. Do you like the past of the Maronite monks who refused to submit to Muslims and lived in mountain caves and built churches in caves? that’s another part of the past of Eastern Catholics…and the list goes on…we cannot reject the church because of the things we deem negative and neglect other pasts just as we cannot reject Jesus because Judas was a bad example…

Okay, I get it. The more I discuss something with you, the more strongly you adhere to the opposite position?
