Hi everyone. Would it be a mortal sin to help some illegally download music that they need for some reason? 🤷

While we’re at it, is it a mortal sin to illegally download music and other stuff too?

I live in Canada and it is not illegal to download but illegal to upload 🤷
I would say it would be a venial sin, but even so, its something you want to avoid

Yes, because it is theft.
I don’t know if theft fits the requirements for mortal sin. For a sin to be mortal, it needs to be of a grave matter, done with full knowledge, and full compliance. Personally, I don’t think it passes the “grave matter” test. Now if you were cleaning out someone’s bank account then that would elevate the theft to a grave matter, but not downloading one song. Now, that being said, it is a venial sin and it would be a good idea to go to confession.

Let me tell you about the new rules on here…
  1. If you support any sort of view that is different than what the mods believe, you will be banned. Discussion is not open for different and new ideas. Even if Catholicism is making a mistake, we support tradition.
  2. Everything the Catholic Church has ever done has been infallible. Therefore, there is no need for you to question anything about Catholicism, the Church is perfect. If the Church told you to kill someone, you should do it, no questions asked.
  3. Any rude and ignorant comments to others stating “You are not a true Catholic if you voted for Obama” will be accepted and is encouraged.
  4. God didn’t give you this conscience to use for yourself. You must substitute other peoples judgment for your own, and never question them, because their judgment is better.
  5. If you child someday asks you if they should use a condom, you should tell them “No, let yourself get HIV instead.”

So many things I want to say in reply, but I have a feeling that it wouldn’t do a lot of good. So instead, I’ll just make one simple statement, “I’m praying for you.”

Notice how he only has 8 posts on here …hmmmm
…8 posts on the first day of membership  And all 8 posts are exactly the same, just on 8 different threads.

That’s the best response for him 👍

I just* love* it when some troll decides to hijack my thread!

Seriously though, would it be a mortal sin to help someone download a few songs on their own computer?

Holly, how about dollar value? A few songs are worth, what, under five dollars?

Is stealing five dollars a mortal sin, or does “grave matter” occur at greater value?

For a sin to be mortal, 3 criteria must be met:
  1. It must be a grave matter.
  2. It must be committed with full knowledge of the sinner.
  3. It must be committed with deliberate consent of the sinner.
Since you would be knowingly and deliberately committing a form of theft, this would constitute mortal sin.

Check online for a legal source of the music you “need” - you can download lots of music for a reasonable price.

I’ve already addressed his trollish anti-Catholic remarks here.

From my point of view, emptying someone’s bank account or stealing their retirement money constitutes a “grave matter.” However, I don’t think something akin to shoplifting is a grave matter. Is it a sin? Yes, of course. Can someone who is more educated in the catechism answer this, “Is breaking any of the 10 Commandments an automatic mortal sin regardless of the severity?”

I’m curious what the pressing **need **is for music. It’s not like it’s food or water and someone will die because they do not have a song.

IMHO, theft is theft, whether of $5 or $500.

I don’t think the argument is whether theft is a sin. I think we all agree that it is. The question is whether it is a mortal or venial sin. As I asked earlier, does breaking one of the 10 Commandments an automatic mortal sin regardless of the magnitude? To put it another way, are you completely separated from God’s grace because you lifted a chocolate bar from a store?

Three separate priests on three different occasions told me that I was being scrupulous over downloading music - that it’s venial if a sin at all.

And considering the number of artists/musicians that themselves support or even encourage piracy, it’s a bit grayer than clear theft. Statistically downloading boosts sales, but that’s another matter.

Do you have any legal claim to the music? No. Is taking something that doesn’t belong to you wrong? Yes. Is doing something wrong a sin? Yes.
