do it with sportmanship.

Think about this - there are many good guys named “Josh”, and there are some very bad guys named “Josh”… does this stop you being called “Josh”? 😉

so it wouldent be bad to cheer / watch that team
Not at all. Just don’t get too upset if your team lose or get mad at someone who does not support your team. 🙂

However, the dress of this team is not my favorite. Imagine one day you stop by your church and wear the shirt with the devil image on… looks kinda awkward to me. 🙂 …but again, no one can judge you or say that you are devil.

BENNIE, I WAS TOTALLY GOING TO SAY THE SAME THING!!

Stupid Ducks. Now, it WOULD be a sin to cheer for them.

beucases its a devil
what is a devil? do you really believe a hockey team is one of the fallen angels who serve the prince of darkness? get real. Just because they have adopted this nickname does not make them real devils. I can call myself Paris Hilton but that is not going to make me a long leggy blonde convict.

lowelldevilshockey.com/ or watch this hockey league or watch nhl
Josh,

Please make an appointment and talk to your priest about these thoughts and questions. You have posted *numerous *times about everyday things that you think might be sinful. Based on the types of posts you are making, you find yourself thinking you are sinning all the time and constantly worry that you might be sinning.

You may be suffering from scrupulosity.

Go talk to your priest!

If playing and/or watching hockey is a sin then I’m pretty sure I’m going straight to hell. Go Sens for the Cup, BTW.

As for the mascot thing, I don’t know that I’d chose that name if I were selecting a team name. Though I don’t think it’s a big deal. Duke is a historically Catholic univerity and they’re the Blue Devils. The New Jersey Devils are actually referring to the Jersey Devil which is a mythological animal. I’ve coached a various levels, in youth hockey where the kids are picking a team name I think it’s more interesting to get away from the run of the mill mascots such as predatory animals, varations on devil, and just stealing NHL club mascots. End of the day it’s really just a matter of intent, I don’t think anyone seriously is “honoring” the devil with a mascot. When this sort of thing goes too far you find yourself at evangelical protestant anti-Halloween rallies.

It should also be noted that this is an AHL team and they tend use mascots/logos/colors similar to their NHL parent club for obvious reasons. This is NJ’s AHL club.

CCM08 beat me to it! As a NJ Devils fan and a Theology teacher, AND a New Jersey native, I am always eager to inform people that the Devils are named not after fallen angels, but after the mythological beast of the New Jersey swamps! Next expansion team…Santa Fe Chupacabras! Or how about the Seattle Sasquatches (never mind…that’s too hard to say…)

I graduated from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA and they are “The Demons”. Didn’t phase me a bit. Never shook my faith at all. I cheered at those games every Saturday night (Bobby Hebert was the quarterback back then). Did my masters in business at University of New Orleans - the Privateers (a type of Pirate). I am unscathed from the experience - except for the MBA I picked up.

Don’t take such things so seriously. Use your informed common sense and make good decisions within your heart. You’ll never go wrong.
