Would it be odd for a white European to become a Melkite priest

Got it. Like I’ve said before, ethnicity is not an issue. I myself am “Greek” Orthodox, but there are only like 10 people in my parish that are from Greece, and maybe 10 more that are actually fluent in Greek. Most parishioners are like my, mixed background, or those of Greek decent that have gone through a few generations of “mixed” marriages. The bast minority of parishioners are Greek. My priest is Scott’/Irish and our cantor, who is kind of a big wig in the Orthodox music world is not Greek either.

Where do you live? The Melkite Greek Catholic Church is very strong in some places and some of the parishes are mor Orthodox than some Orthodox parishes.

I’ve heard that St. John Chrysostom is a pretty active parish.

Yea the priest there has been very helpful!! I’ve been emailing him back and forth for about a week now.

Not really. Personally I would find it endearing, but I’m a Maronite so this would apply if you’d wanted to be a Maronite rather than Melkite priest.

Please note that even though Eastern Rite churches tend to be more ethnic than Latin ones, that doesn’t mean you can’t join and fully participate if you’re not a member of the group. So yeah, you can be a Melkite priest. The majority won’t mind you becoming Melkite if you’re European either, not unless they’re really over the top and these are frankly the type of people at whom other people roll their eyes. Generally you wouldn’t be seen as less of a Melkite if you’re not of ME descent.

Christ’s peace.
