hi

i love icon painting, and im a good painter. i really want to paint Our Lady and also Jesus. but i have no models to use and want to paint over a long time (im working full time so can only do a little each day). would it be wrong if i pose for my painting of our Lady wearing the right garments and stuff? it seems wrong. just to clarify, i dont think i’m our Lady, but i am the easiest avaliable model and know exaclty the post i want, and dont mind if i take ages choosing the angles etc.
i mean in renaissance times, they used MEN as models for most portaits. and someone must have posed for the Our Lady images? but i dont want to offend people if they see my image and say ‘wow thats amazing…oh, its a self portrait, how presumptuois’

also would it be wrong if i use a local policeman to pose for my Jesus painting? what are the rules?

I would ask the opinion of experts on the Eastern Catholic forum who have a greater knowledge of icons and the rules for writing icons, but I don’t think the assumptions and questions you have posed seems to agree with that understanding.

If you are speaking not of an icon, but a religious portrait in the more realistic western style of art, yes there would be no problem using real people as models. Artists have done it all the time. Unless the artist had some particular sacreligious reason for doing so, it would not be a problem.

yes, im talking just only about a religious portrait. i dont want to paint myself as the Mother of God, and then have a bunch of fundie-Protestants chase me with rocks when they realise i’ve just painted myself. are you 100% sure this is ok?

I am sure.
If the protestants chase you, whatever. They shall do so anyway.
