Would Jesus Support the Nanny State?

I’ve really struggled with the correct Catholic opinion on government welfare. This is probably the best argument I’ve heard against it, from a Chrisitan point of view. Basically, he contends, the welfare state requires a government to be so massive so as to infringe on our human sovereignty and our ability to fully express our free will as God intended:

No he wouldn’t support a nanny state.

Here is what I think is a good model: countrystudies.us/germany/112.htm 👍

A Priest said in regards to Obamanomics, the bible supports giving while Obama supports taking.

AN AMERICAN DEMOCRAT: You have two cows. Your neighbor has none. You feel guilty for being successful. You vote people into office who tax your cows, forcing you to sell one to raise money to pay the tax. The people you voted for then take the tax money and buy a cow and give it to your neighbor. You feel righteous.

Hi MMann25,

When Jesus was asked by the wealthy disciple ‘what must I do to be saved ?’, Jesus replied, ‘sell all you have, give the money to the poor, and follow Me’

God bless

‘If you have faith, no explanation is necessary, if you have no faith, no explanation is possible’ St Thomas Aquinas.

I think the question of this post is a mirror that reflects only our own opinion. As Jesus never addressed this particular part of politics, I would say that any answer we give begs the question. So, my own opinion is that we remember his own political system that he lived in. To my knowledge he only commented on it once, when he said, “Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar.” In a democracy, this has little impact, other than our basic civic responsibility, since we (in theory) form the society. The form that it should take? That is the mirror.

Except that by the time the government gets done taking its cut, the neighbor gets a bucket of sour milk.

If the Government took 30% less of your money, do you think you could be more effective at helping others? I do. I hate to quote this song because the man who wrote it was a kkk supporting racist bigot but in his song he said “Federal aid, federal aid, we hear it all the time, but it’s not really federal aid. Cause the money is yours and mine, the money is yours and mine.” I think we believers could be a far more productive entity in helping those in need than he government ever will. Just my personal opinion though!

It can be dangerous for us to speak for Jesus regarding politics as it can be self serving and out of context.

Obama feels Jesus supported more taxes-go figure he has butchered numerous interpretations of the bible, Obama feels Catholics should use birth control and step aside on abortion. Funding a trillion dollar debacle called Obamacare, Obama wants taxes raised to fund a govt that has deficits in the trillions annually. Insanity.

Our problem is way too much spending…its not more taxes. Nor is that religious.

Very well. Romney ordered catholic hospitals in ma under Romney care debacle to pay to kill babies.

Romney wanted tax money to go to homosexual marriage and adoption.

Romney refused to sign the anti tax pledge.

Romney condemned the debt ceiling limit.

Romney created a nanny state in mass, and he pushed to give rights to gay marriage.

Pure justification. No one in history has funded and supported abortions more than Obama. Obama views a unwanted baby as a tumor, that must be removed.

what about caring for our disabled members of American society?
want unmedicated psychotic schizophrenics walking the streets homeless,
or how about quadriplegics or vets with head trauma, the chronically diseased etc…

my conscience would bother me if i wouldn’t help them.
If my care for them comes through my taxes, so be it, IMO.

I believe (not sure) that our care for them right now has them at poverty level.

Incorrect, and the misrepresentation of Jesus’ words to follow a prejudice is all too common. Such misrepresentation is precisely why there is so little progress in the world towards the good and the true.

In Mt 19:16-22, the rich young man asked “What must I do to have eternal life?”
Jesus’ answer was to “Keep the Commandments” which were listed, plus “love your neighbour as yourself,” and then the positive commands that admit of degrees of perfection. Then he asked what he lacks, to which Jesus replied “if you want to be perfect, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

The young man who might have become an Apostle was dismayed. Jesus then speaks of the difficulties when rich, not of impossibilities.

There is never condemnation of riches but of the misuse – that is the key to understanding our freedom and our “right to freedom of economic initiative.” (Bl John Paul II). That is why Bl JPII condemns the Welfare State and emphatically supports the free market in a society of wise laws.

So he’s the same as Obama. At least his base isn’t pro-abortion and gay marriage (the Republican Party).

Pure justification. No one in history has funded and supported abortions more than Obama. Obama views a unwanted baby as a tumor, that must be removed.
One does not have to support it more, he only has to support it. We must look to the outcome of his actions.

One does not have to support it less, he only has to support it. We must look to the outcome of his actions.

The only allowable abortion under direction 45 and 47 is an indirect abortion, of which neither candidate abides by. The only allowable stand on Marriage is that marriage should be between man and woman, for which neither candidate agrees.

Justification theory is saying, well Romney does it less than Obama, so therefore one evil is less than another and therefore justified.

Both Romney and Obama represent the worst our country has to offer. Romney inveted healthcare debacle and the Obama campaign literally copied it. Mass. already requires abortions since the inception of Romney care much like it’s now being required by the US govt. And under Romney the courts and state shifted to a same sex marriage. Romney is now magically pro life and against gay marriage, but not after literally putting both into affect and backing both as Governor into law. Mass. has led the nation and our population into the breach of hell, and is the epitome of the Nanny state. Romney is the leader and creator of the Nanny State, and Obama copied his model.

As the poster you quoted made attempted no interpretation, how could he have misinterpreted. He only quoted, okay, paraphrased the verse. I know it makes people uncomfortable, but it is part of Scripture.

The poster did not interpret anything. He just quoted. The poster wrote nothing incorrect.
