Great response, Jennifer. I think you’re right on the money there, both about the grave matter of celebrating a “homosexual orientation”, and about citing the right to life as a fundamental and first principle of justice, which is why it supercedes all others. I would just like to point out a struggle of mine, to illustrate the point.
Before my conversion, I indulged in pornography and masturbation for many years without realizing that I was addicted or that I was causing any harm to myself or others. Since my conversion I have seen the consequences of my actions as an atheist. I can say with assurance that I am addicted to pornography and masturbation, and that indulging in those acts when not entirely free not to may for that reason be less than a completely mortal sin. However, I don’t treat it that way, and I don’t make up stories for myself about how if I just stopped committing the acts my proclivity to do so would be something to celebrate. That’s absurd. Unless I am mistaken, this is analogous to Ryan’s struggle. Throwing out Church teaching that doesn’t conform to your will, habits, or even disordered nature, does not make you happy and healthy. It makes you in danger of losing salvation.
P.S. Homosexual orientation was invented in the 19th century. So was Fundamentalism, so let’s stop throwing them around like they mean something.
