I don’t understand why celibacy seems to be celebrated over marriage. Here’s a hypothetical question. Would Mary’s stauts in the Church be different if she had not remained a virgin after Jesus’ birth? Would she be any less holy? Wouldn’t she still be the theotikos?

Dear Andy,

The status of celibacy is not affected by the sanctity of the person who is celibate. I have a better hypothetical question: Say you’re a married person; would your marriage be on a higher level if you were married to God rather than to a mere human being? Of course it would—because of who God is. Throughout her whole life Mary’s true spouse was the Holy Spirit. Her virginity is sacred because of who God is. See—it’s all about God.
