Would there be any Martyrs today?

Oh and one other 20th century martyr who certainly did not die making a defense of faith but most certainly did die for it: St Gianna Molla (sp.) - I don’t think any of us can argue that her sacrificing her life for her child was not sacrifice in the name of Christ.
 
There have been more Martyred the last Century than in the history of the church. This Century hasn’t started much different.

There was a change in what consists in consideration of Martydom through. The issue came up when St.Maximilian Kolbe was canonized. I could be wrong but I remember all being against Kolbe in Sainthood. Pope John Paul II basically over-ruled on his issue of Sainthood.

Kolbe’s case is a very interesting case study.
 
BTW There’s a Catholic Priest sentenced to Death in Iran as we speak for “Thoughts of Christianity.”

“Asia Bibi” sentenced to Death in Pakistan for Blasphemy against Islam, it go’ s on and on in basically all areas that Human Rights are in question.
