While I was web surfing I recalled a past innocdent with a former friend. The memory made me angry enougth to want to the point I thought of hurting this individual.

I pushed the thought down as quick as it came up…

Would this mean I am now under mortal sin?

Or is the fact I pushed the thought away as quick as it came to mind make it venial?

You have to dwell on it and get joy out of it for it to be a sin, you also have to will to sin. I have thoughts that come into my mind all of the time but I just push them out and go forward. God bless you!

What you had was a temptation. Because you did not consent, you did not sin at all, mortally or venially.

If you had stayed with the thought of hurting that person, enjoyed it a bit and perhaps even made some plans to carry it out, that would have been sinful.

God bless you.

In fact, when you have a temptation or involuntary bad thought and resist it (rather than consent to it), that is meritorious — part of the spiritual battle.
