Hi, I’m just wondering something 🙂

In Matthew 12, the Pharisees apparently committed the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit cause they said that Jesus healed the demon possessed man by a demon, rather than the Holy Spirit. It makes sense that this statement came from an inner rejection of the Holy Spirit in their hearts.

But can a person commit this sin accidently?

For example… .a while ago I had a spiritual experience that I am not sure is from God. It just caused me much anxiety and it didn’t resemble anything I’ve ever experienced from God. So I thought to myself, “it might be demonic”. But then I got really scared…what if the experience is from God, and the Holy Spirit was trying to point me in some direction, and I labelled it as demonic? would this be a sin?

However, I do see a difference… unlike the Pharisees, I believe in Jesus and the Holy Spirit… I don’t hate the Holy Spirit at all… also, they didn’t want to attribute a good event to the Holy Spirit, whereas I didn’t want to attribute something that felt like a bad event to Him, because I believe He is good… He is the Spirit of peace, love, joy, etc, He is very gentle, and the experience was very different.

But ever since then, I’ve been really worrying that I had blasphemed God, without meaning to… IF this experience is from God, does that mean I called the Holy Spirit a “demon”? 😦

what do you think?

If your conscience is telling you that this is a message from God and if the message itself does not conflict with Catholic teaching and known morality then there is nothing wrong with believing or not believing it is a message from him. If the message does conflict with Catholic teaching then I would ignore it and try to fight against temptation to accept it as such.

There is no such thing as “accidental” sin. To be a sin you have to KNOW it is wrong, AND you have to DO it anyway. If you were not sure that your expirence was from God, then rebuking the enemy was not wrong. This would be something to bring up with the priest the next time you go to confession.

Monica the so called inforgivable sin is not an actual sin since all sin no matter what can be forgiven by God. When you are referring to the unforgivable sin then try to understand that it is actually the whole rejection of God and His Mercy. So it is not a particular sin but actually a rejection of His Grace and Mercy. You cannot do it accidently OK but what you do is what you do not do that is repent and asking for His Mercy. That is unforgivable because you do not want to change. This is what Jesus meant when referring to the sin against the Holy Spirit. To put it plainly, as long as you repent and confess your sins you will never and I repeat never commit it. God Bless!

Monica, you do not need to worry about having commited the unforgivable sin. CCC 1864 explains that one sins this way only by not repenting and thus rejecting God’s mercy and the gift of eternal life. Notice also that it must be deliberate. Remember, this is straight from the Catechism of the Catholic Church - although you sometimes can be confused by it and need clarification, it is fully trustworthy.

If you are alive and reading this, I have 100% certainty that you have not committed the unforgiveable sin.

You are in my prayers, Monica.

A person cannot commit any sin accidentally.

Just an additional piece of advice. Please do not take it the wrong way. Monica you are really too hard on yourself. Stop judging yourself OK. Take all your concerns to your priest and let him to be the judge but please do not be too hard on yourself. You can be your own worst enemy. Please try to lighten up. You are not a priest. If you don’t mind me saying you may have a problem to be overly concern that God is going to punish you. Try to forget that and do bring those concerns to your priest. Self will is hard to grasp and difficult to change and to repent of it will involve listening more to others and following their direction than trying to follow your own. Let me tell you a story to illustate my point. St.Maria Faustina was at confession onced with her confessor and noticed she was upholding her own opinions over her priest. Later that evening Jesus visited her and he mentioned to Maria that He is displeased more with people who have self will. She then realized that He was referring to her. She changed in time her own disposition and acted accordingly so every time she went to confession she will listen intentively to her confessor and follow his direction. We all have that problem with self will and in time we need to cross it out and pay attention to those around us especially our confessor and especially Our Lord. Self will is in all of us and we all need to think of Our Lord more and pay more attention to His Words of Love, Mercy, Compassion, Humility and try to imitate them in our own lives. Read the Diary of St.Maria Faustina and you will get a better picture of what I am trying to say. God Bless!

Hi

?
no one can commit any sin accidentally. sin requires sinful matter, full knowledge and full free will consent and intention

If an individual has a question about sin in their own personal situation the place to address it is in confession with the priest.

Thank you everyone! 🙂 I’m going to talk to a priest about this, but I feel God has been really helping me and strengthening my faith.

By the way, that experience I described, - was pointing me away from the Church.

I don’t often hear “intention” used in the forumula, but I won’t object to that. What you are describing is mortal sin (assuming the “sinful matter” is grave/serious). One still commits venial sin if there is sinful matter that is not grave/serious, or there is grave matter, but full knowledge and/or full consent of the will are not present (CCC 1862). I’m not sure if something with non-grave matter is even a venial sin if there is a lack of full knowledge or full consent of the will, but I would guess that it is .

On another note, I’m glad to hear, Monica, I’m glad to hear that things are looking up for you. I will keep you in my prayers.
