Would this be a sin?

I have a question that I’ve been wondering. If someone is a Pharmacy technician for a living is it a sin for that person to hand people birth control, they are not the Pharmacist or doctor but only do the counting of the pills and cash handling and handing the drugs over, so is this a sin? Or would you say its better to not be a Pharmacy Tech. since there are really no pharmacies in existence that do not hand out birth control pills, etc…

God Bless and thanks,
Kaily

Also remember that there are some legitimate medical reasons for taking birth control pills as well…it is not always geared towards birth control.

We also don’t know what the person’s intent is. Maybe they won’t take them. Perhaps they will go to confession. It is not for us to say or to judge. As the article link describes, it is a proximate case and should not be considered as directly cooperating with evil. Good luck and pray for those who need it.

I once heard from a priest in a homily that it is indeed a sin and it should not be done.

How can you judge whether they are takign them for contraception or another medical problem for which they are used?

Yeah, a lot people take them for medical reasons. I do. I’ve got a disease that causes my ovaries to not work correctly unless they’re “kicked in the rear” by medication. I’ve never had sex but I’ve been on “the pill” since I was 15 because of this disease. If I don’t take them I quadruple my chance of getting several types of cancer later in life. I wouldn’t think giving them so someone like me would qualify as a sin under your church’s teachings…at least I’d hope not

No, it wouldn’t be considered a sin. 🙂

With the hipaa laws there would be no way to tell the Dx of a person!

The use of artificial birth control pills to treat conditions really bothers me. Not because of the fact that these pills are helpful in treating such conditions, but is there no effort to develop medication that can treat the condition without being a contraceptive as well? If there is such an effort to develop this medication, please make me aware of it, because I will gladly support the effort!

Sometimes that’s just the way it goes. Every medication or medical treatment has its risks and rewards. Unfortunately, the pill has the downside of being contraceptive, but on the plus side it has allowed many women to be able to live their lives without debilitating periods and pain. I participate in a hysterectomy forum where many of the women there were on the BCP to stave off having to have a hysterectomy as long as possible while still treating their condition. At this time there just aren’t that many options when treating women’s conditions like this.

To the OP, no it’s not a sin. The majority of women getting the BCP are probably using it for contraception, but since there’s no way of knowing without quizzing each woman, you aren’t held respsonsible for judging each woman’s use of the pill. If you feel like you would be uncomfortable dispensing BCP for contraceptive reasons, you probably shouldn’t work in a pharmacy.

With my illness the only way to get my body to do what its supposed to do is to take birth control pills…their mode of operation is the only thing that can give my body the jump start it needs. Further research wouldn’t help my condition at all, the physiology of it requires the effect that birth control pills have on the body. I hate taking the dumb things 😦

I understand that people take them for legitimate reasons, however if I were a pharmacist tech. I don’t think I’d give them out if given the choice. It may sound like big brother to some but - do we really need to endanger the salvation of others any more than it already is?

This question has been answered before, hopefully it would not be too hard to find it using the search function (in an orange bar near the top of the page).
Far as I remember it comes down to “remote material cooperation with evil” which isn’t a sin.

Thanks for the replies. I’m not a Pharmacy Tech, so its not a problem for me, its just something I always wondered about.

God Bless
