Would this be a valid Rosary?

If you say a standard five decade Rosary each day, do you have to say the opening prayers (the Creed, 1 Our Father, 3 Hail Marys and 1 Glory Be) and the closing prayers (Hail Holy Queen)? I want to simplify the way I pray the Rosary to make my prayer more effective. One time I prayed the Rosary in Spanish with the aid of videos uploaded by a priest and he just dived straight into the five decades.

Would just saying five decades devoutly constitute a valid Rosary?

Thanks in advance 🙂

What does it mean to say a “valid” rosary? A rosary is not a sacrament. It cannot be valid or invalid. Pray the rosary however you find it most edifying. It’s a private devotion. There isn’t a “right” or “wrong” way to do it. There are the fairly commonly practiced ways of doing it, but it isn’t a thing of right or wrong, still less of valid or invalid. Pray however helps you.

Sometimes I try to pray all 20 decades in one day, and if I don’t make it all the way through, I’ll just pick up where I left off the next day. So I might pray ten one day, and then pick up with just the first sorrowful mystery the next day.

The reason why I’m concerned about validity is because I was consecrated by a priest, I believe to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and, unless I’m mistaken about what Saint Louis de Montfort wrote, part of that is an obligation to say the Rosary daily.

Well, validity refers to whether or not a sacrament was accomplished–i.e. were proper matter, form, and intent all present at the working of the sacrament. There isn’t a “valid” or “invalid” when it comes to the rosary. And the obligations of Marian consecration aren’t really canonical obligations in the way the obligation to attend Mass or for clerics to recite the Office are. They’re devotional practices associated with receiving the promised graces of a consecration of some kind. But they do not bind under pain of sin.

Pray the rosary in whatever way works for you, and be at peace.

Let me ask you this, then. When I do what I said above, and pick up where I left off, breaking up 20 decades over two days, have I committed a sin?

I’m not sure I understand.

If you want to say all 15 (or add the luminous mysteries to that) decades in a day or two, then you only have to say the beginning prayers and the ending prayers once.

You never commit a sin if you don’t say the rosary properly, or at all for that matter.

Okay, so then why did you respond that the OP should always pray “all the prayers that come with it” if it’s not wrong to skip them?

There is no “proper form” to the rosary, only a prescribed form. If you don’t do the prescribed form you may miss out on the blessing attached to a certain prescribed form, but it’s still a valid ‘rosary’

Before I was adopted I rather liked the rosary but didn’t know how to pray it. I had one of those plastic-n-knots ones and I was under the impression that ALL the beads were Hail Mary and the knots were Our Fathers with the plastic centerpiece being a prayer to Mary and the Cross being the Apostles creed. I also thought you had to go up, around, and back down the “neck” of the rosary.

I don’t think God gave a flying freak about how I said it, just that I did.

Mary takes our crayon drawings of prayers and, through her intercession, makes them look like Rembrandts before the Father 🙂

My wife LOVES the Joyful Mysteries … for her, they are sweet … and so she prefers to only say those each day.

No … no sin at all … Thanks be to God you are saying what you are saying!!

One of my priest friends was in a coma for two months … and through it all … the only thing he could do was to finger the beads as he lay in his hospital bed.

He had been run over by a car at the Orlando airport and had his skull fractured, half of his bones broken and his heart arrested for half an hour … and then after two months came out of it to describe the experience.

Well, if you’re going to commit, then commit. It isn’t sinful if you don’t commit, but you should follow how it’s supposed to be prayed if you’re going to pray it.

Basically, they begin the rosary as they begin the Divine Office. I’ve never heard of this, but if that is their Tradition, it’s beautiful.
