Would this be considered the right way to prepare for confession?

To list each objective mortal sin, in kind, number, and anything that would alter the sin’s gravity, that you have committed as well as the any of the nine ways you were an accessory to that sin and any near occasions and causes of scandal to that sin you committed. Would it make an invalid confession if you generalized and said that you were an accessory to sin ____ times as opposed to listing each one?

Also, no one is obliged to confess a doubtful mortal sin, correct? If so, what exactly would be the church’s definition of a “doubtful mortal sin”?

Speak to your priest. This smacks of scrupulosity. If you go through life like this being so scrupulous will make your life miserable. TALK TO YOUR PRIEST.
 
I need to know these things! How can I make an invalid confession and erase any mortal sins I may have if I don’t?

(I would, and have, talked to my priest, but he’s extremely busy. I want to go to confession very soon.)
 
I agree with the previous poster, that the presentation on confession by Father Larry Richards is very good and helpful. His website,thereasonforourhope.org/ offers much good information.

Also, if you go to You Tube and type in Father Danny Garcia, you will find clips from a presentation Father Danny gave on the sacrament of reconciliation. I found it very helpful when I went to confession for the first time in 20 years. You do need to scroll around to listen to the presentation in order - I think there is 12 or 14 parts.

You are scrupulous and you MUST take these things to your confessor and NOT to random people on the internet.
 
Yes, I am trying to find a regular confessor. But with a confessor, 1) you don’t have a whole lot of time, and 2) you work out more specific details of questions; this is a general question regarding confession validity.

I STRONGLY suggest that you call your parish office and tell them that you need to make an appointment to meet with your priest, a priest, however your parish or diocese is set up. if the person on the phone asks how long you need, say one hour, that you have some very pressing personal issues to discuss.

That is all you need to tell them. Then you will have sufficient time to talk to the priest about these issues and get some clarification and guidance.

I think that the problem is that none of us feel competent in an online forum to address your questions and concerns. it’s not that anyone has abandoned the original questions, it’s just that this is similar to someone coming online and saying, “I have this lump here and I wonder what it means.” the only sane and responsible response is to tell them to seek a doctor’s attention.

I don’t think many people could count themself truly competent to answer faith questions on this forum. Please, I’m going to be leaving town for a while (where they don’t speak English) and I’d really like to get to confession before then.

Why do you ask questions here then if you consider hardly anyone competent to answer them. Doesn’t that seem odd to you.

Just go and talk to your priest. Your scrupulosity is getting the better of you. We cannot help you with that. Only your priest can.

I will take back - to a degree - that statement. The thing is, it seems that people on this forum generally seem more orthodox and cite sources compared to priests I’ve talked to. I don’t think I’ll be able to talk to a priest soon, either.

My scrupulousity does tend to be on the intellectual side as opposed to a more anxietal form.

Please; what’s so bad about answering a question?

Call your parish and make an appointment for a face-to-face confession. Talk to your priest and then follow his advice. If he says you don’t need to confess X, then don’t. If he says come to confession 1x a month, than do. Do not shop around for confession, do not second guess your priest, do not ask us if you last confession was valid. Put yourself under obedience to your priest on this matter and rest easy.
 
Why should I be able to fully trust the priest? He isn’t infallible, after all.

Amen Brother! Focus on the big picture, get a generous heart, and worry about the good you do, not so much about the good u don’t do. If you’re focusing on doing good, the other stuff won’t find room to bug you.

Does that mean you think we are infallible and you can trust us more than your priest???
Please get a grip. GO AND SEE YOUR PRIEST. You can make appointments outside Confession times.

No he isn’t infallible. But the priest is the person God put in authority over us as far as the sacraments. If you put yourself under obedience to him, you are really trusting God, through the priest, to direct you. In the confessional (as when he is saying Mass), the priest IS the person of Christ. We confess to Christ and Christ absolves us, through the priest.

For a person of your temperament, it is best to relieve yourself of temptation by having only one confessor and following his direction.
