Would this constitute full knowlege of a mortal sin?

Unitl a month or 2 ago I was pretty much addicted to masturbation. I had heard quotes from other priests and The Catechism of the Catholic Church condemning masturbation, but had also seen sites that told me it was OK. I knew that The Catechism is pretty much 2nd in line to The Holy Bible, and I trusted it for must things, but for this I didn’t agree with it because I thought The Bible said nothing directly against it. I am now convinced otherwise. Did what I did constitute full knowledge of a mortal sin?

Yes, you had full knowledge but rebelled by “not agreeing.”

Have you been to confession since then? If so, this is a moot point.

There is only one answer to this question. You need to talk this over with a priest in the confessional, period. If you already did then you know your answer. If you did not then now you know what you must do. For us to discern all of the intricate details that would constitute mortal sin is speculative at best and totally off base at worst. If you believe what the Church teaches, as you have indicated, then believe that the Sacrament of Reconciliation is for cases such as yours… God bless…teachccd

If you have been to confession, you have received absolution as long as you did not intentionally withold this whilst knowing it was a mortal sin. If you did, then I’m pretty sure that confession was invalid, and you ought to confess that you witheld it. Even if you did not sin by not confessing masturbation, you still have to confess it sometime since you are conscious of it.

A couple notes about mortal sin: As per CCC 1735, (as well as CCC 1860) some factors might make one less responsible for a sin. Please note one should not be certain of a loss of culpability due to the existence of factors, but rather be aware that it is possible that one is less responsible for a sin than they thought. You may not have committed mortal sin, but I strongly advise you to err on the side of believing that you did.

Keep in mind also CCC 1859 in which it says that your sin may be more voluntary than you thought by having a hard heart. Once again, I advise you to err on the side that you committed mortal sin since the matter is grave and you had knowledge.

While there may be things not literally spelled out in the Bible, we have long standing Tradition of what is right and wrong as well.

Why not discuss it with your confessor? There are mitigating factors to this particular sin that reduce culpability that may or may not apply to your circumstances, but I would think that your confessor would be much better placed to judge that, than posters on an anonymous Internet forum!

Though one should be careful when confessing to not confuse addiction with simply not wanting to give up the habit. I will be charitable to the OP and assume it is an addiction, but that he should be careful when assigning this term.

If you has already read the Catechism regarding masturbation then you had full knowledge.
The CCC contains a summary of ALL Church doctrine and discipline and everything in the CCC must be accepted and obeyed. The basis for these teachings is Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition and The Magesterium.

Have you been to confession? It seems you have a number of posts worrying about whether you must confess particular sins of lust–and its good that you ask–but it seems that the common answer is to go to confession. Masturbation is something that you absolutely should confess–if not because it it may be a grave sin, because it is a difficult problem that you need the sacrament of confession to help overcome. Rather than worrying about whether you need to go to confession, just go! And once you go, it doesn’t matter whether the sin was mortal or not, it is forgiven.
