I was wondering if having a bankruptcy would prevent someone from becoming a priest?

It depends on how long ago it is, but the most important thing is what the specific diocese or order you are considering says. Not every order or diocese is the same, so I can’t tell you what they will say.

I would believe that if you have taken care of the bankruptcy and/or it was more than 10 years ago, I don’t think they would bar you from the priesthood. Everyone makes mistakes, and in this day and age of economic downfall, it’s very easy to have financial problems.

I would ask the order or diocese you are considering what their guidelines are on those who have a history of financial problems. They will probably ask you what led you to declare bankruptcy. If it was something beyond your control, like unemployment, then they will probably overlook it.

Best of luck to you! God bless! :crossrc:

For religious orders, it is as CarmeliteGirl said. It would depend on how long ago and the reasons for it.

Entering bankrupcy to clear out any debt so one could pursue the religious life/studies for the priesthood would be a big red flag for any vocations directors.
