Earlier today my 11-year-old sister was searching Google images for pictures of fashionable clothing so that she could print them out and glue them to one of her notebooks. I know from experience that immodest, nasty, even pornographic, photos will often show up during Google images searches. I warned her to be careful about what she searched because these photos could show up, but I didn’t suggest that she stop her search. Also, at a later point, she’d been accidentally logged out of her computer account, so I logged her back in so she could continue her search, even though I did feel conflicted about this. At one point, there was a bad photo on one website. She very wisely scrolled back up the page so she wouldn’t see it (I was proud of her), but I had to admit that I had enabled her to see such a photo.
That being said, I do feel like this was a situation where I could have prevented something harmful, and I do feel like this was a mortal sin because I was putting my sister in a potential near occasion of sin. I just want to know if anyone else has a different take on this, or if you agree.
