Last night, I was in a bookstore and headed straight towards the religion section. I grabbed the Catholicism for Dummies book and grabbed a seat to glance through some of it. Towards the back of the book I notice that a small booklet falls out and lands in my lap. I was of course thinking that it was some additional piece of the book and quickly moved to place it back in.
That’s when I realized what it was! It was a brightly colored christian track! One of those comic book things that people use to evangelize. Then I thought about it and it made me very angry. Coming from a protestant denomination I knew exactly what they were getting at…thinking that this was a new convert to Christianity and was hopefully going to sway them away from the Catholic Church. I realized this after reading the last paragraph…which stated something to the fact that “you can’t earn eternal life, it’s God’s gift to all…” that’s always been one of fundamentalist biggest arguments against the Church…errr! I put the book back and took the booklet with me. I looked up the website listed and it’s apparently run by Kirk Cameron and his partners…
I didn’t look but I’m assuming that they didn’t put these tracks into any other religions books…such as Eastern Religions and the such…
Would it make you mad and what would you have done?
Thanks and God bless!

I wouldn’t get mad.

This is just a very poor attempt at evangelizing for his denomination. I actually look at attacks like this as a good thing, because it shows that the Catholic faith has something worth attacking. We are the only faith that is attacked on a regular basis, because we take a stand on moral and social issues, we have a magisterium, a Pope and Bishops, a rule of life, the Sacraments, devotion to Mary and the Saints, and so many other things that people do not understand, nor want to understand. It is the complete faith, and a complex faith, unlike their own, so they attack what they don’t understand.

Pray that the person that placed that booklet inside will someday actually pick-up the Catholicism For Dummies and actually read it and see the light!😃

Also, pray for one who looks for the booklet to buy the Catholicism For Dummies as well. 🙂

Please don’t be mad. I used to do things like that. I was sorry I couldn’t do more to win souls and I was shy about it being so new to Christianity myself. I went to bookstores and put tracts in books about religion and wherever I thought the seekers might be looking and curious. I put them in books for members of other branches of Christianity because I had such a strong experience of zeal for soul-winning where I was at that time that I assumed other groups didn’t have any – or why hadn’t they won me? All I was trying to do was throw in my lot with the most passionate Christians I could find and be as bold as I could in doing for others what had been done for me: talking them into believing in Jesus and getting them into a church that was welcoming. I just wanted to go to Heaven and see as many people there as I possibly could.:o
Now I have become convinced that the Catholic Church is right but this is despite the fact that it was Protestants who reached out to me again and again, dumbing things down when necessary, to get me to think about my soul and my need for Jesus Christ. If they also had had the idea that it was rude to share unless asked, who knows where I would be now? I might not ever have become a Christian at all and I might have drunk myself to death by now as well.

Your display about Easter Vigil made me think. Take a Protestant to the Holy Saturday Mass. To me there isn’t a more beautiful Service anywhere.🙂

yes this happens a lot, which is why a lot of books are shrink wrapped. I would bring it to the attention of the store management since it is against their policies and they are justified in aprehending the offenders if they find them.

Get mad?

Don’t get mad.

Get even. =)

Say a prayer - one that thanks God for someone who loves the Lord enough to try to prevent what they see as errors taking someone away from the Lord; then pray that this individual, who obviously loves the Lord, would be guided to the real truth about Him.

Look at it this way: most Catholics wouldn’t try to do anything such as this: evangelization is always “someone else’s thing” - that someone else being a priest, or a nun, or a deacon, or some holy person, but heaven forbid not them. They would never even pruchase a tract, let alone leave one where someone else could find it.

The person who did this was most likely not of any malicious intent. Incorrect, yes. But ill intent: I seriously doubt it.

Only thing I’d have probably done was gone through the other Catholic books and pulled the tracts out that were probably in them too.

Would any of you put a Catholic tract in a J.I. Packer or Joel Osteen book? By a Catholic tract, I don’t mean an anti-Protestant tract, but a pro-Catholic tract – perhaps even a homemade one encouraging people to visit sites like catholic.com or ewtn.com to get the real scoop on Catholicism.

What do you think?

God bless!

I think you would probably be banned from the bookstore if you get caught.
Good point. Let me rephrase the situation: I have picked up JW and Herb(?) Armstrong magazines hidden behind our missals in our church. If I were to visit the church of another denomination, would it be “kosher” to slip a Catholic tract or pro-Catholic insert into their pews or racks? Would that do more harm than good? Just wondering. . .

Thanks and God bless!

I probably wouldn’t do it, but I would be inclined to want to find all the protestant tracks and put them in Islamic books… evil I know, but they would be the ones to complain until management did something about it.

That’s a different situation. If you enter another church’s property of which you are not a member, for purposes other than that property is intended to be used by its owners or directors (e.g., participation in one of of their services as a worshiper or observer according to the terms set by that church), you may, if caught, be charged with trespassing and disorderly conduct.

Well, first of all, don’t send it back to them or you may see it again. You cannot stop this predatory tactic of the misled, so pray for them and maybe send a letter correcting their private interpretation of scripture. If there is room, make corrections to the tract. Do so with great patience and love (if you knew me you wouldn’t believe I just said that). What if, the person who opens your letter is a remorseful fallen away Catholic? Your gentle shove may have just called them back.

In the fullness of time, the Lord will ask, “What did you do for these least of my brethren?” This tiny act may just have restored the truth to a life.

Christ’s peace.

I don’t think I would have been mad but I would have been mildly annoyed. Protestant evangelism gets on my nerves because Protestant churches do not contain the fullness of the truth. *Only *the Catholic Church contains the fullness of the truth! I would have responded by placing a Catholic tract in the book had I had one with me.
