Yesterday, after picking up my son from pre-school at our Catholic school I noticed a sign on the pole at the end of the driveway. It was black and painted in white letters it said “Hey, George, who would Jesus bomb?”
I was astounded. In my opinion, this is disrespectful at the least. Even if you do not like the President’s policies, he is still the President of the USA and deserves to be addressed as such. I know plenty of people who I find to be very offensive, but I still call them Mr. or Mrs., etc. Is this what they are teaching our kids these days? Especially at a “Catholic” school? I think it is terrible.
It also bothered me because no one seems to be concerned about the single biggest evil being commited in this country. Namely, abortion. I didn’t see a sign out there during the presidential campaign that said “Hey, John, who would Jesus abort?” Maybe I should make that one and hang it on the opposite pole. Wonder how long that would last?
Anyway, I just had to vent and get some other opinions. I may be too sensitive, but I think I will bring it up at the next pastoral council meeting. Any suggestions?

I agree with you, but I noticed in your own posts you never once referred to “Senator Kerry”. Just “Kerry” (and, for that matter “Bush”). I find that to be equally disrespectful.

No, it wouldn’t really bother me. People have all kinds of opinions. And, if someone wants to voice their opinion about the war without bringing up abortion, that’s also OK with me.

I really try not to let stuff like this bother me. I’m glad I live in a country where people can voice their opinions. Also, I don’t see anything wrong with calling Pres Bush, ‘Bush’ or Senator Kerry ‘Kerry’.

Nope, I have bigger worries than this. 🙂

If you are referring to a person in their professional title, I would say for example President Bush. If I am referring to the President away from his governmental duties, I would just say Bush.

Yet, I do call my priest ‘Father’. However that is a problem because my brother is a priest. I sometimes refer to my brother as ‘Father Brother’ or ‘my Brother Father’. 🙂

That was a very disrespectful cheap jab to publicly humiliate you. If anything, the fact that you “earned” a public protest sign, you are to be commended for your outspoken faith as it affects your voting priorities. It would seem that at this post election point, the poster should be asking Jesus (and Church teaching) this question himself. I would vent elsewhere and let it go–sore losers are hard to console.

By the way Timidity, I did not find legeorges’s Bush comment at all disrespectful (or as personally directed) as the church poster.

i wouldn’ assume the school is the author of the sign… if they are, it’s a private school… they can even pray on school grounds if they like… but, no matter what you profess, someones toes will likely get squeezed…

if it gives thee a pain… speak to the school administration… or go higher, up to the Bishop if need be…

you too have the right to voice your opinion, it’s America…👍

I agree. The sign posters are representing an opinion that I don’t hold, and are using figures of speech that I would not. But we do have freedom of speech in this country, and for that I am thankful.

I’m sure that whatever I would say about abortion or the Church would be highly offensive to whoever created this sign, but I have the same right of protected free speech to say it. Freedom of speech does not guarantee freedom from being offended.😉

Hehe, with me it’s my uncle. Sometimes I call him “Father Uncle” for fun, though I normally just say Uncle.

Next time that happens, call law enforcement. I would have called the FBI regarding a possible hate-crime and bomb threat.

Hate crime is a felony. I am not in a position to want to tolerate it. Because my family is a potential hate-crime target.

Since the message made mention of a bomb, I suppose that law enforcement people would have taken the message quite seriously. The entire greater area of Washington DC has been through a lot of trouble these last ten years. Such nonsense as your painted note would not be tolerated.

If you still have the evidence, go ahead and make a police report and turn the evidence over to police. If your house is attacked in the near future, it may be important evidence.

Dear JMM,
Hate crime? :hmmm:

Did you get the play of words of the sign? It is a take off on the slogan “What would Jesus do?” It is asking ‘George’, presumably George W Bush, “Who would Jesus bomb?”. Get it? In other words, the sign is asking Christians if Jesus would approve of our actions in Iraq.

It was obviously written by a war protester. But, I don’t think they are advocating any hate crime here, just trying to get people to think. They possibly could be someone who really doesn’t care about what Jesus thinks, but it also could have been written by an anti-war Christian.

I totally disagree…there is no implied threat in this sign and such a report smacks of the way Germany was under the Nazis with the Gestapo! How would you like it if someone called you in as some sort of terrorist for something like this? Besides, just when did terrorists start hangin’ out signs? I suspect that the individual who put up the sign was making a “just war” statement, so take it for what is, agree or disagree, but don’t get all bent outta whack. You’re right about one thing…there are much better issues to focus on and we need to be about our father’s business don’t we?

Perhaps I really did misunderstand.

The original poster is legeorge. I thought perhaps the poster’s name was George. And the sign at the end of the driveway, I thought was at the end of George’s driveway. Was the sign at the end of the school driveway?. Also, I thought the sign was black and hand-painted. Or was that a typo and the sign was printed (not painted).

If a hand-painted sign was placed on a pole at the end of my driveway, and had my name and the word “bomb” in the note. Then you should know that I would be calling the police or the FBI.

But I may have mis-understood several points in the original post that weren’t clear.

Yes, I think the sign was at the end of the driveway of the OP’s son’s Catholic pre-school, probably put there by a third party. If it was put there by the pre-school, it is rather inappropriate. I can see your confusion.

I just don’t believe in going to battle over stuff like this. It’s just an opinion, nothing more, nothing less. Opinions probably go to the grave with us. I doubt if they exist in Heaven. 🙂

That would bother me terribly. It is extremely disrespectful to our president. It is also irresponsible for the fact that it sends an anti-Republican message and by default a pro-Democrat message. It is no secret that the Democrats are closely alligned with the pro-abortion advocates, so the flag is also scandalous!

It also begs the question: What other liberal messages is this school sending to my child behind my back? If they have the gaul to put that flag up for all to see, there is no telling what else could be going on behind closed doors.

It would bother me. Church is a place where we ALL come together, and a sign like that just puts more fuel in the fire. Especially if it was put there by the school/Church itself, I would start to question what my child is being taught. Especially since I back President Bush!!

Thanks for all the (name removed by moderator)ut. I am sorry my last name is George and I probably didn’t clarify that very well. I am sure it was a political sign and it was hanging at the Catholic school where my son goes to pre-school. There are grades pre-k through 8th in the building. I don’t like the war, but I also don’t like liberals trying to brain-wash our children. This is exactly why my kids only attend pre-school at the Catholic school. Then I take them out. I expect a so-called Catholic school should be held to a higher standard. At least, that is my opinion. I find it outrageous that on this day, while there is a very Catholic event going on in Washington, the March for Life, that this same school has made no mention of it. The anti-war sign was just a symbol to me of all that is lacking in Catholic education today. Being anti-war is fine, especially if you can be respectful about it, but there needs to be a balance that I am disturbed to admit is lacking. I hope that my own parish and school are in the minority, and that the majority of Catholic Schools in America are holding fast to the authentic teachings of the church. Cafeteria Catholicism is rampant here. Sometimes it gets discouraging, and my original post is an example of this. Sometimes, the little things just get to you, ya know? Thanks again. 🙂

You’re probably right, but at least I used their last names. And I didn’t encourage my kids to do that. When speaking and not writing in online shorthand, I usually use the proper title. But you are correct. Your own beam first, right?

I agree with you George. I wouldn’t trust my children at that school either. It’s one thing to hang a disrepectful sign like that posted on their property, it’s even worse if they left it up after seeing it. That sign might be a sign to you to look for another school for your children. Have you considered homeschooling your child. My children went to Catholic and public school and if I had to do it all over again, I would homeschool them. There are too many people out there with agendas.
