Would you accept Holy Eucharist via intinction from an EMHC?

The Cardinal mentioned —Card. Arinze – is the Prefect of the Congregation of Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. The Congregation is part of the Roman Curia. Card. Arinze would be aware if any such dispensations for EMHC’s to offer communion via intinction were authorized. From his statements — there is no such authorization.

In exercising supreme, full, and immediate power in the universal Church, the Roman pontiff makes use of the departments of the Roman Curia which, therefore, perform their duties in his name and with his authority for the good of the churches and in the service of the sacred pastors.

Thank you Walking Home. You said it all!. i strepped in here and read about priests, deacons, 'EMHCs gibving communion by intinction, the for and against, mention of the Cardinal Arinze, who i did not know, and my sole knowledge of the dispensation given to EMHCs to give communion by their bishops. Well, i was certainly wrong. But i brought forth all fronts, and you told the EXACT AND PERFECT answer to the question at hand in answer to my column. i really appreciate it. it is too bad that their are 10 replies after yours that entirely ignored your reply. What a crying shame. i, for one, seriously appreciate the education. I wonder if anyone will think to look back at the corect answer when they see this column…

Sorry, Benedictal. I wasn’t including you. I
believe you were adding things, not going against Walking Home.

RS would not be the primary document here – the GIRM is, as mentioned earlier:

287. If Communion from the chalice is carried out by intinction, each communicant, holding a communion-plate under the chin, approaches the priest, who holds a vessel with the sacred particles, a minister standing at his side and holding the chalice. The priest takes a host, dips it partly into the chalice and, showing it, says, Corpus et Sanguis Christi (The Body and Blood of Christ). The communicant responds, Amen, receives the Sacrament in the mouth from the priest, and then withdraws.

In no way does the GIRM make any specific mention of not allowing deacons and the laity to distribute via intinction. The use of “priest” depends on its common usage throughout the document and sadly, the Church seems to be less than uniform in its use. It might well be suggested that if it was cut and dried they wouldn’t be offering Cardinal Arinze’s verbal comments as a primary source for not allowing deacons and the laity to intinct.

Cardinal Arinze’s verbal assertion is not authoritative. It was off-the-cuff. While it does not contravene the GIRM it cannot add to it either.

So?

Nor have you. Has anyone seen that Italian language dubium yet?
Actually, RS carries just as much authoritative weight as the GIRM. They don’t compete against each other. In fact, RS clarifies and further defines what is not spelled out specifically in the GIRM. Therefore, your assertion is incorrect.

Furthermore, may I remind you that Cardinal Arinze isn’t the only one whose fingerprints are all over RS. The document was a collaborative effort between both the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments and the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which happened to be headed at the time (2004) by the former Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger. Many of the former Cardinal’s pre-papal statements made their way into this document.

The fact of the matter remains that RS clearly spells out that the priest is the one who distributes Holy Communion through intinction. Cardinal Arinze’s remarks, even though you may dismiss them as off-the-cuff, are certainly consistent with what RS said. After all, who better than to make that comment than the man who actually had a hand in writing RS? He knows better than you and I because he helped compose the document. You and I didn’t.

What a rather motley crew.😉

You – apparently have been overlooking this:

Please pardon me. Apparently, i overlooked one… in the future, i will abstain from remarking about your collumns at all. You apparently do not like kind words said about you. Please do not start battles in this forum, too.
