“Would you change your religious belief to marry the person that you love?”

Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup, third-runner up in the (pageant) Miss Universe 2011, answered, “I would not marry the person I love because the first person I love is my God and the person loves me, he should also love my God." (she answered the question without the benefit of a translator)

Oprah Winfrey said via NBC News, “I have reservations with the results. If the only basis is the Q and A portion, after having been trimmed down to 5, Ms. Philippines deserved to win. What made her different from the rest is that she had no seconds to rethink of her answer as she had no interpreter to break the ice. The rest had their interpreters and having breaks on seconds to think about their answers. Hands down, Ms. Philippines answered straight to the point.”

Any comments from Catholics on Supsup’s answer?

The question is unfair, as most Christians wouldn’t begin the process of courting/dating wihtout knowing the other person was of the proper religious belief first.

That’s a rather heavy question; brevity may be the soul of wit, but how do you adequately respond to it in 30 seconds without reflection? It definitely sounds as though if she had an interpreter and time to reflect, her answer would be clearer, although we understand the main point.

I agree with her. Religion is one of those things you’d best sort out before you marry.

No they wouldn’t, but if the other person had a change of heart, do you care about them enough to have a long and hard talk to discuss the truth?

Do you think Ms Shamcey Supsup’s answer right in her answer? Why?

I’d be interested to see reply from Catholic’s point of view, thanks.

It is correct in concept, but needs further definition to be Absolute. How does she define God, in her statement?

Another Excellent Question Pag Hingowa!

She is right but I wonder how many would actually do this. Because when a person
is in love, the brain follows the heart. And the brain always says that this will be different and will work out somehow. I will change him/her because we love one another so much that it can’t fail. Others have failed but we are the exception. This is the brain working overtime to accomodate the heart which is unchangable in its outlook.

This is the reason why dating is important. To find out how a person is inclined on
important issues before the heart locks up the brain.
